Best book(s) for overview of Internet Marketing?

by akwit

Looking for something up-to-date that will give some good insight into each of the major internet marketing verticals.

I have the basics down; would like something that digs a little deeper into the above.

Ideas?

Thanks!

There is a good book that is on the market and is perfect if you want to learn internet marketing.

You can get it on Amazon.com and the book is called:

How I made my first million online and how you can too by Ewen Chia.

You probably aren't going to find what you are looking for. You'll need to decide on something, dissect it and seek out individual sources of information.

For instance, if you wanted to run a camera website that was monetized by Amazon you might pick up some materials on journalism, web development, graphic design, copywriting, social media, video production, etc..... you wouldn't necessarily need to be an expert at all of that, but each of those things would come into play to a certain degree operating a site like that.

That's assuming it was ever relevant. Ewen is a run of the mill "guru" character. Be careful taking recommendations on this forum. These kind of threads tend to fill up with members of the gooroo cults.

Sure it was written 7 years ago but many of the basics that come from there still work today.

Any particular reason as to why you're looking to read books that mention every sub niche in IM? Is there anything you currently resonate with or see yourself doing? There's not going to be a 1 book resolves all so to speak.

I read Online Business Productivity - How to Start a Productive Online Business and Get Sh*t Done - Even When You Are Working from 9-5! by Timo Kiander which was a great insight.

It's not a general overview of IM so to speak. You could easily get all that info from here just by using the "search" feature. In general... the overview will always be the same. But marketing methods change and adapt, but you never asked about that, so whether it's 1 year or 10 years, the overview will pretty much be the same.

The Four Hour Work Week is also good. Some resources referenced are a bit dated but the principles of building a "hands off business" and outsourcing do not change.

    Forget books. Seriously.

Internet marketing changes so rapidly, your best bet is right here on WF or other digital locations.

        Akwit,

I agree with others that you may not find exactly what you're looking for in one recent book.

I totally disagree with Tom that you should "forget books" as there are some very valuable reads on specific topics.

Here are a few books that I enjoyed and can recommend:

Jeff Walker's Launch - "An Internet Millionaire's Secret Formula to Sell Almost Anything Online, Build a Business You Love, and Live the Life of Your Dreams" (2014)

Robert Cialdini's Influence - "The Psychology of Persuation" (revised edition - 2007)

Robert Cialdini's Yes - "50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive" (2008)

Al Ries and Jack Trout's Positioning - "How to Be Seen and Heard in the Overcrowded Marketplace" (2001 but still very timely)

Also read the books by Seth Godin, like Purple Cow, All Marketers Tell Stories, Unleashing the Idea Virus, The Big Moo, Permission Marketing, Free Prize Inside, Small is the New Big, and several others. Some are best sellers and you can find them all easily.

Personally, I believe it pays big time to be a student of marketing for life if that's your career. And don't forget to read the marketing greats like Nicholas, Halbert, Abraham, Kennedy and many others.

        The best to you,

Akwit wishes to learn internet marketing. Since internet marketing is a rapidly advancing and changing endeavour, with areas becoming obsolete at the drop of a hat, it is truly pointless investing in a fixed source of information (a book, be it virtual or hardcopy) since it could very well be outdated the instant you buy it. Now, if we're talking general principles of marketing (and related subjects), then I'm a strong supporter of books. Despite having been to university for 6 years, despite being an author myself, I'm also a self-confessed bibliomaniac. (If you ever want to get me a gift - bookcases!) Unfortunately, Steve, your reply is an oversimplification here. It is - honestly - very poor advice. I only point this out, not to belittle you, but to prevent newcomers from wasting time, effort, and expense. Most of the information about internet marketing is freely available. Not only that, but the information is an organic, ever-changing thing, responding promptly to industry changes. I love a good book as much as the next person, but - in this instance - a book simply won't do.

I don't know about the best books, but I have been a follower of Ryan Deiss for many years and his monthly membership for DM Lab is well worth it. Everything is spelled out in bite-sized chunks of marketing plans that you can implement and understand.

    This:

The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future by Chris Guillebeau

I'm close to finishing it now. Very good though the title is a bit misleading. Yes, there are plenty of examples of people starting with very little capital. But there are just as many that needed significant seed money.

The book's strong point is that the author has interviewed hundreds of entrepreneurs and assembled a collection of their most unique and inspiring success stories. Many of the featured people were working a job and lost it. They felt they had no choice other than starting a new company. Some very interesting stuff. The examples are a fairly even split between storefront business and online commerce.

If you're looking for 'how to market' a business you'll find some good info in this book but overall, this really isn't a how to book. It's more inspirational than hands on though there are many marketing examples and smart business practices built into the stories. The author is a smart guy and has been successful at many enterprises. You can get it on Kindle for $9.99. Well worth the money and the time it takes to go through it. It's written in a friendly, conversational tone. Good luck.

  • I have nothing against ebooks but for me it is best to get video tutorials instead. I would suggest you look for good online courses out there that will teach you how to move forward with your affiliate marketing business. You may also look into Youtube videos- there are tons of great free tutorials there. Aside from that I also like Udemy. Perhaps you can find good training materials for affiliate marketing there.
