Bookshops, magazine racks, forums... :-)

Bookshops are my favorite. Just browse, and take a notebook with you. If someone has written a book on a topic, chances are it will make a great niche.

A tip: once you have your list, use SpyFu to check how much money advertisers are spending on the topic. Many topics are complete duds. If there aren't advertisers, generally speaking the topic isn't worth the effort.

Keep your eyes and ears open in the offline world to things people will likely be searching for in the days to come. Find the niche trends before they become trends... (if that makes sense)

Work backwards! Look at the niches among the top products on Clickbank's marketplace. These are the niches that represent high customer demand.

Anything anyone spends money on is probably something you can market online.

All very good answers and I use a lot of the resources that other people have already posted.

Here's another one that I "discovered" quite by accident:

Being a person that actively tries to keep myself surrounded by positive, uplifting people I usually turn a deaf ear to anyone that complains a whole lot.

However, one day about a year ago I found myself stuck in a car for over an hour with two of my girlfriends' friends that are constantly complaining about anything and everything.

Just as I thought I seriously entertaining the idea of hurling myself out of the door at 70 mph, I realized that many of the things that they are complaining about may be troubling a fairly large portion of the population. Perhaps even people that are willing to actually do something proactive to find a solution for that problem. People that are willing to search online and *pay* for a solution to that problem.

You know, unlike the two yappers in the backseat that just enjoy complaining.

Now, wherever I go, I try to proactively listen to what other people are saying bothers them.

I've found some real gem niches this way.

I guess the point is that it really all goes back to listening to what people want and then selling it to them.

Can't get any easier than that.

I agree with an earlier comment that said picking a good product from Clickbank first is a good way to find a niche. The majority of Clickbank products are either created my Internet marketers, or with the help of Internet marketers, and this means the majority of your niche research is done for you.

For example...around January last year I stumbled on a Clickbank product with a gravity of just 7. It was fairly new and it was in a niche that I never knew existed - mending broken relationships. The product was of course 'Magic Of Making Up' by Travis Sago, and it exposed an insanely profitable niche that made a huge difference to my income.

I met up with Travis in Vegas earlier this year and it was great to hear how he'd been nailing this niche as an affiliate BEFORE he released his product. As most affiliates now know, MOMU has since gone on to become something of an industry standard, and made a lot of affiliates (that previous had no idea that people would pay for this information), a lot of money.

I'm not saying this is the only niche research method that works, but if you're strapped for cash and can't afford to buy a product that will help you uncover them, you could do a lot worse!

Hope this helps.

Are you failing as an affiliate marketer? There is still hope!

To be honest, Google Trends isn't so much of a "Niche Marketing" tool - it just allows you to make some decent cash if you want to expliot recent events (hint: blogs and articles)

If you are looking for "super" sub-niche markets (like Purple Flamingo Training) then you are going to need to dig pretty deep in Google's search tools. If you are looking for general niches and trying to squeeze your way down, simply looking at various industries can help.

Example:

Business and Marketing -> Niche Marketing -> Niche Product Creation
Health/Medicinal -> Cancer -> How to prevent cancer in its track
Fitness -> Basketball -> Tips for becoming a point guard
Sports -> Weight Training -> Strength Training
Out Doors -> Frisbee -> Becoming an ultimate pro frisbee player

To find niches I normally browse the book store or maybe the magazines section. Then I go "nichier". I know there are a lot of woman's magazines, but which ones sell the most? I guess teenage magazines could be one of those, so you find out what teenagers are looking for: getting rid of acne, getting a boyfriend, getting better grades and so on. You can do this for any niche.

For the book store I do the same. I know self improvement books are one of the all time popular and I know for a fact that "Think and Grow Rich" is one of the favorites there. So I think (or ask, or just read the whole thing ) what the book is about and what niche is the best: motivation, success, wealth creation... See, three examples of smaller niches right there, all within the self improvement niche.

Ok I hope that helped. Good luck with your research

Best
James
