Effective Way of Marketing Music Album?

22 replies
Hello Warriors,

Recently a friend of mine recorded his first rock album and he wanted to sell it worldwide. I created the website with the shopping cart (both physical and digital delivery) and submitted the album to iTunes, amazon music and a few others.

And here comes the tricky part - marketing. I definitely need some advice from you, because I am very unfamiliar with this market.

So where should I go from here?

    • What i know helps is Facebook. I play in a Band and we were asking ourselves the same Questions like how to reach more People. We also have our own Youtube - Channel with lots of Videos (Live, Promo and Studio Vids) and our Homepage professionally designed(our Drummer is a professional Coder) and two self - released Albums. We cannot play so much gigs cause we all have a regular Day Job and our Singer has Kids, so its not that easy...

      But then I had the idea to do a FB - Ad Campaign. Most important is that you reach the Right People. So you have to target them, and thats very Easy with FB Ads. So i promoted a Post from our Fan Page (Live Video) to People who like a well - known Band here in Germany which plays the same Style of Music (Rock). I must say that I only spend 4 Euros per Day for that Campaign and it went live for a week. After that Week we hat 150 new Likes!! And the best is that these People participate with us. Really important is regular Posting which engages People! And maybe through this you even reach more People for absolutely free

    Effective way of marketing music ? Here's my idea. First of all you must make good music, if music is no good than nobody is going to buy it. Secondly as a marketer post it on Youtube, post it where others in your music niche are hanging out, spread the word of it online with free music posting singles from the songs, than on the bottom of the video you can put something like "If you enjoyed this song visit link below for some more free music from such and such " than have an opt in form, collect the email, and from there give away the freebie you promised, than promote related material of yours to your listeners on your list, If you post good music on YouTube and on other social media, it can go viral and passed around and you then can have a lucrative music/internet business

    A little tips here... since you are in Music niche, why not you make a tease video for a few songs and publish it to Youtube. Then, create awesome channel and put "call to action" subscription button in your video. Gather as much subscriber as you can because they will be your buyer in future..

    You need to spread your video using Youtube Ads.. I think you can afford their cost for advertising. In my experience, It would cost you a few cents each people who view your video

      Thanks for the tips guys!

      I optimized the YouTube channel, gathered aprox. 900 FB fans, signed up for major band sites such as ReverbNation. Also I tried some gigs with music stations distribution, but without much success.

      But since I released the digital version of the album in the website's store (in Mp3), I noticed a few blackhat sites distributing the album.The bad thing is that they appear in search results.

      The album is legally copyrighted, so can I rely on Google to remove those results?

        I think you should also contact the hosting companies used by those blackhat websites so as to report the pages with your stolen content; and

        Here are some creative marketing options for your friend's rock album:

        STEP 01. Develop brief mind-blowing animated 3D videos about controversial news stories that are timely and popular among your target audience. Start with one video about one controversial news story. For example:

        • Choose a controversial news story that's relevant to rock fans or rock musicians or gamers and so on in your target areas / countries;

        • The soundtrack / music background of your video should feature brief excerpts of some songs in your friend's rock album; and

        • When developing this video, think of movie trailer material -- Something that will entice viewers to see the full video (see step 03 below)...

        STEP 02. Post it in Youtube. Here are some things to remember:

        • Without affecting the attention-grabbing, enticing and compelling attributes of your video's title and description -- Use exact match keywords with significant local search numbers in the title and description of the video, specifically exact match keywords that are relevant to the controversial news story;

        • Look for other popular, trending and top viewed videos that are relevant to your target viewers and the controversial news story, in order to take note of the tags used in those videos -- Use those tags in your video, since this will increase the chance of your video to appear in the relevant video sidebar of those popular, trending and top viewed videos;

        • In the description of your video -- Include a link that points to your opt-in offer in your friend's website or in your friend's Facebook Fan page (see step 03 below); and

        • Use attention-grabbing images as the thumbnail icons of your videos...

        STEP 03. Create a mailing list of fans. Here are more details:

        • Set the landing tab of your friend's Facebook Fan page to display your opt-in offer to first time viewers;

        • Also post your opt-in offer in your friend's website and integrate Facebook retargeting code into the pages of your friend's website;

        • Embed your video in your friend's Facebook Fan page -- Include an attention-grabbing title and image/s, enticing description and compelling call to action that has a link pointing to the opt-in offer on your friend's website; and

        • Your opt-in offer can be something like a digital demo album download that contains 3 to 5 MP3 songs or so from your friend's rock album, along with the complete version of your animated 3D video -- Also include demo album cover JPG and PDF lyrics of the 3 or so MP3 songs...

        STEP 04. Promote your opt-in offer. Here are more details:

        • Promote the embedded video in your friend's Facebook page across your target viewers via Facebook post boost and via Facebook news feed PPC / PPM;

        • Share your Youtube video across Facebook Fan pages that are relevant to your target viewers and to the controversial news story;

        • Join Facebook groups that are relevant to your target viewers and to the controversial news story, and share your Youtube video in those groups; and

        • Advertise your video via Youtube...

        STEP 05. Via follow-up emails -- Share across your subscribers (people who download your opt-in offer in exchange for their emails) links to your friend's live videos, new animated videos about relevant controversial topics, relevant news stories and posts in your friend's website or Facebook Fan page, and promote your friend's full album...

        P.S. Considering the things above -- You can also contact authors of popular, trending and top viewed videos that are relevant to your target viewers, specifically authors with Youtube channels that have many subscribers. You can ask them if they would be interested in original soundtrack / music background for their future videos (brief excerpts from your friend's rock album) in exchange for links (in the descriptions of those videos) that point to your opt-in offer...

    I'd definitely try out the video views option with Facebook Ads.
    Make sure you add your link to the description on the video and make sure you target your genre tightly. With this you will gain fans and a virility push from likes and comments

      Yes, the project is on every major social network.

      Marx Vergel Melencio wow thanks for this gold post. Definitely will try some of your suggestions.

      The album also went live on iTunes last week. If you like heavy/trash metal you can hear it on iTunes here - I.V.R. - Soul Confession or visit the official I.V.R. Project website. Any warrior support would be appreciated.

        Yeah, I'm into thrash and hardcore music... I'll definitely check your friend's group and mention them to my friends -- I played bass back in college for a post metal core group, and I still keep in touch with my friends in this network, even though we've mellowed down a bit and now play acoustic jazz and blues sets (ageing process?)...

      Having done a bit of music related marketing... the thing you need to remember as good as it is to spread here and there and everywhere you need to be consistent with where you are funneling all of this. My preference is funneling everything to iTunes. Its just simple. You have the link to iTunes on your youtube page right? and your FB and where ever else?

      Step out of "Music" for a moment, you are selling "Socks" and you have a website that sells socks. so you go to FB, and point towards the website. you get on twitter, you point to the website. you do Google adwords advertising, you point to the website. you do reddit, you point to the website. No where in this equation are you starting store after store after store.

      Because there are so many places that you can set up a sales page and "get your music out there" there is that "need" to do that, thinking its the right thing, and the reality is you are just spreading your attention to thin. Get the music in one place and start focusing all of these avenues of traffic to that one spot. your life will be easier, and "Success" will be more obtainable.

      as far as radio play. find the most local rock radio station that has a "Local Artist hour" many rock stations do, and it is usually on Sunday nights. Just figure out which one or 2 or 3 that is closest to you, and get the CD in their hands!

      Best of Luck - and ROCK ON!

    Right on!

    Congratulations to your friend on that!

    I would recommend you to market on Youtube and as many other video community sites like that. Share a little bit of his music and then implement internet marketing strategies to drive traffic to all of those videos.

    You should also start building a Following in Social Networks, especially Twitter and Facebook.

    Create a Facebook Fan Page for him. Then work on building up the Likes in there and the engagement of the posts you make. Be very consistent here, as consistency is the key to building up the engagement and Likes.

    Also, create a Twitter account for his music. Start following people and engage with people who likes similar type of music. Be very consistent here as well.

    You could also create an Instagram Profile and share images daily. Learn how to expand your network on Instagram and redirect people back to your Youtube Channel or Facebook Fan Page.

    I believe Social Networks are the best and fastest ways to promote Music. If the music is really great, it's even better!

    I hope this helps!

    I wish you the best of the best.

    Keep up the great work!

    Cheers!

    Trying to sell an album after it has been released with no prep is the equivalent of trying to sell a clickbank product with no leads or opt-ins after it has been given out to the public. It can be done but at this point you are somewhat working backwards.

    First and foremost you must build the audience over the course of a couple months the easiest ways to currently do this is by using youtube and soundcloud

    The easiest and quickest way to generate traffic on youtube are for artists are to do tasteful and interesting covers of current and trending songs that are similar their own styles and within their own demographic and market. They should then redirect this music to their own. After they they have released plenty of content they will have a consistent amount of traffic they can use for list building. Facebook "like-lock" this youtube content so they can only get the HQ download if they like the facebook page.

    Repeat this exact same algorithim on soundcloud. However on soundcloud you can only "like lock" content if you have a pro account

    Here's something that's been known to work.

    Learn the hot new songs in your genre. It's best if they haven't been (officially) posted on Youtube yet.

    Record a cover. It doesn't have to be perfect. Post it on YT with tags like "X's new song" Etc.

    People are always searching for new songs they've heard. If you get in early you can get a ton of traffic this way.

    Put a link to your website or FB in the description, "If you like this you'll love our other stuff!"

    I know a girl who has done very well with this in the pop genre.

      ^ This ^

      Is one of the better suggestions for a newer unknown artist to get some traction.

      If Brent had not said it, I would have.

      The number of artists trying to become noticed online is staggering, however, if you noticed, the ones who usually gain any kind of attention, (on YouTube etc) are those who became popular by doing cover songs.

      The great thing about YouTube is that you can get away with covering popular songs and putting it up there as a video, and becoming famous because of it, without getting sued.

      Just don't release and sell the song cover without the proper legal agreements in place. (but that's a whole other book.)

      Good luck.
