Bandwidth and Disc Space

There was a topic recently about which hosting company people used and how much they paid a month

Because I needed a lot of bandwidth for a project, I've been looking into the hosting companies that offer "unlimited bandwidth and disc space" - which we all know is a myth

Buried deep in the TOS are disclaimers about fair useage and x% of CPU

So none of them are true unlimited

I'd be interested in how much true bandwidth and dic space Warriors really get and how much they pay for it

I'll start the ball rolling

My hosting service give me 200,000MB (200GB) of disc space and 2,000,000MB (2,000GB) of monthly bandwidth for $8.95 a month based on an annual plan

I have dedicated servers for the resources and root access, but I can tell you that those datacenters offering unmetered bandwidth restrict the size of the connection to typically 10Mbs or, if you pay much more 100Mbs.

I have calculated that there is little benefit over metered bandwidth in many cases.

That said - 2TB of bandwidth is a huge amount by any standards, and for $8.95 per month really cheap.

I have run a small Internet Service Provider and people like your hosting company had a really good attempt to run us out of business - they failed.

If you tried to get even close to using 200GB of disk space and 2TB of bandwidth per month you would find your account terminated. I know ISPs that run on less bandwidth than that and they pay thousands of dollars for their connections!

As far as how much space and bandwidth you need why not calculate it? You know how much space your web pages take up and how large any downloadable products are. Most websites use well under 10MB of disk space. Ebooks tend to be between 500kB and 5MB. You should know how many visitors and page views and downloads you get each month so you can calculate your bandwidth requirements.

For example 2,000 page views per day and 100 downloads per day would need, say, 3GB of bandwidth per month.

By the way, what guaranteed uptime do you get for your $8.95. A 99% guarantee means more than 7 hours of downtime per month!

My reseller account offers 10Gb disc space and 20Gb per month bandwidth. I know that sounds restricted - but it's real - no Ts & Cs to hide behind. Their service is second to none and I'm not leaving!

The website would eventually contain 100,000MB + of downloadable products.

As I haven't started to market the site yet, don't really know how many page views per day I'm likely to get

Well to answer your question properly, probably you need to tell us what your hosting is for?

if you have lots of affiliate then bandwidth may be a huge issue otherwise you don't need huge bandwidth..

It is unlimited as the size of the pipe coming out of your servers. If you really need a lot of bandwidth consider getting an Amazon s3 account or a cdn provider.
