When the going gets tough ... DO THIS

Hey Fam

When things are tough going (lets be honest we have all had times of slog) what do you do to personally keep yourself motivated and on target.

Why not try self encouragement and revisit your goals and think about the rewards. This is a really good and powerful thing to do.

Also taking a break when feeling overloaded is a simple remedy ... I watch a movie or just spend time with the family.

Anyone else got any methods they would like to share???

John

I think of both Push and Pull factors to motivate. Fully maximise the kick-in-the-butt force.

Push: Losing my home, eating from a dumpster, scrapping for coins just to eat, selling off parts of my body that I dun need, selling my children, dying homeless... you catch my drift...

Pull: Dream home, dream car, freedom of time, freedom from a mundane existence, buying that bottle of vintage wine, showing the taxman the finger, making your neighbours wonder if you are an online porn king... let your imagination soar...

John, I do two things that always work.

    1. I read through a list I keep of my successes. They are grouped elementary school years, high school years, college years, young adult years, and older adult years. This list brings me right back up and into a good motivated mental state.

    2. I keep a gratitude list of all the things in my life for which I am greatful - material things, friends, times I've helped others, times others have helped me... everything. I just read a little bit of that list. During the past 20 years my gratitude list has grown from a few initial items to a 68 page, single-spaced Word document with one new gratitude on each line. I add to it regularly.

What we think about expands. Our thoughts detemine whether we will see opportunities and take action, or whether we will miss opportunities and complain.

That is very unusual. You are not normal. (Of course no one is.) I'll be paying more attention to all of your posts from now on. I enjoyed that, it's a little impressive.

It reminds me of a couple of quotes from my all time favorite speaker, Prem Rawat.

In this life, begin, begin, to count your blessings. You want more blessings in your life, than you have, then begin to count them. And you will. And you pretty soon start realizing that counting the blessings is a blessing. And then the feeling of joy that counting the blessings brings is incredible. Another blessing. You want more blessings in your life; just start counting your blessings. Every single day.

You know, the problems most people have, is because they haven't turned on their appreciation engine yet. Just turn on your appreciation engine. Let it run wild, it's ok. It's all right, let it run wild. But appreciate and enjoy this gift.

When it gets really bad, I stop, take a break. Go over all my goals and ackomplisments, review how hard I had to work to hit my previous goals and how I hit them. Then I am always pumped to get back into it!

I grab a friend and go out to the movies and watch a good comedy and try to laugh my ass off. I know, that's basic, but man what a way to feel refreshed and take your mind off things. I'm good to go the next day.

No, I don't get out much.

You need to do three things (that were hinted at here)

1.) read your goal list (you do have a goal list correct?) and make sure you have VISUAL and AUDITORY stimulation to go with it: in other words you should have some sort of picture or images, videos, etc. to re-stimulate your thoughts about your goals. You should have affirmations that you say out loud, or even have recorded.

2.) Review the goals and achievements that you have already accomplished - these rebuild your confidence that you can do it because you have already done it before.

3.) Get with your mastermind group or mentors and encourage each other.

You do those three things plus get some exercise, good food, good sleep, you will be re-energized to take on your goals - you will have new ideas and concepts, and most importantly new confidence.

    - most importantly... Do it now.

    It works for me!

In addition to this, I take all my goals/dreams and rewrite them into a "personal success story" as if it were reality today...

      try it...

also I listen to some nice meditative, new-age or celtic music

It might sound a little odd, but I love to watch nature documentaries. This is for two reasons.

One, when I watch a nature documentary I get so swept up in awe of what I'm watching that it totally takes my mind off things and leaves me completely relaxed.

Two, when you see how hard the rest of the animal kingdom has it, whatever seemed like an issue instantly becomes nothing but a trifle. They sure do it tough!

If there's no nature docos to watch, then I love to watch comedies or animated/3D movies, for completely light hearted entertainment.

Whatever takes your mind and occupies it with something light and calming. After that I find I can just keep the ball rolling easily.

Jogging, or walking. I love it, but most people don't. But once you do it the first time, you feel so good about yourself and accomplished already. Once you get your legs and lungs built up, it becomes more natural and you feel so much better all around.

Church. Hey, just mu suggestion. This does not always make you feel good though, sometimes it can show you different things about yourself and bring out different emotions you really need to experience. Man, last Sunday it took all I had in me to not burst out because of my convictions, and I probably should have.

    kk-bye guys!

When things pile up leaving me totally burned out I relax with my family for the maximum time possible, then look at what my life will be like if I don't get busy, and compare it to what my life will be like once I have everything accomplished.

    Works everytime.... Almost.

I usually play guitar, turn off the laptop and take a walk, get a coffee or a bite to eat, or go for a drive to get re-energized.

It usually involves relaxing...maybe sitting down with a pen and notepad...then I get the idea and direction I need to go after a while, usually.

Yeah, lots of the above--stupid TV, taking a walk, talking with a friend, sometimes just a few minutes of meditation to get the brain to cool off. I'm not too big in the motivation stuff at difficult moments. Seems like i need to get into the feeling realm, or physically move about to take my attention elsewhere.
