Maybe...maybe you can have someone else write it and sell it on Amazon, seems like millions are trying this.

    I don't know.

I do know about selling information products, have created scores of them, and they can be outsourced and sold, some for decades.

So, I'd encourage you to lose the ebook idea, and think about what sort of information people are buying.

Sure, I do. I wrote an eBook in my niche. It took about 1 month to write it. Launched it to my email list and sold about $4k in the first month. Now selling about 1 or 2 copies a day ($30 ebook). Just launched on Amazon, but no sales yet. It's best to have an audience to launch to first.

clearspark, if you have a list, before to sell it directly to your member list, you should start selling it at amazon and point to your members to buy from there, get reviews and your book BSR will be improved drastically and your sales will jump from the beginning.

IMHO the only way to make money from an ebook is to sell it to your list. In fact, you can turn it into a bestseller that way, as at least two Gurus have done, by telling their list "I've just lowered the price. Buy the book and I'll give you the following incentives ... (list the bribes here)" Then watch Amazon till your book hits #1 and take a few screencaps. Then add a little silver star to your book cover saying "*#1 Amazon Bestselling Author!*"

Takes a little of the romance and magic out of it, I know, but there you are.

I have lists > 50,000 in 3 different niches and regularly promote my ebooks to those lists.

First, is through a 7-part e-course or video course (have done both) where the focus is on first identifying with the prospect (lay out the challenges, why what is out there already won't work - at least fully and begin to seed what alternative approach will which plays into your ebook). Next, give a tip or two from your ebook (or in addition to, but aligned with the solution you give in your ebook) - then you mention a more complete, faster, simpler, proven system is available in the ebook. If you can, run an "early mover" discount that expires in 24-36 hours. Next, provide a case study or two, any testimonials you have to help convince them others have been able to use your material and see results. Finally, you can finish the series with a Q&A or common objections video/email that addresses common concerns with a counter-argument.

At each phase you are soft-selling your ebook, providing useful and inspirational content that then leads to your offer.

        Hope that helps.

        Jeff

Selling eBooks can be very profitable. I personally have not released anything on Amazon but there are a lot of people who are doing it very successfully. It seems like the key is to find a hot niche, create a buzz for your book with free downloads, and slowly but surely get reviews and move up in the ranks. A lot of people have also talked about how effective it is to have multiple books in the same niche to cross promote. So it can definitely work but takes good research and effort to get it going.

As a writer with little to no marketing experience, can I engage in some kind of a partnership with a marketer who is savvy enough to sell the ebooks I write, allowing us both to split the profits...also, if you have any other tips for me to make a steady stream of income as a writer...

      Thanks for this...

Yepp, just released my first ebook a month ago and sold about $150 worth. It was a book personally written by me.

I have my second book written and ready to go. I'm just working on the back-end of it tonight and will release it by tomorrow. (My second book is outsourced)

There's a lot of money to be made on Amazon, but a lot of the profits come from sending them to a free bonus, where they enter your sales funnel.

Don't Google "Five Free Traffic Sources: Every Website Needs" this week...

Putting an ebook as a free download once every 90 days, and having it lead to your sales funnel is a very good tactic that will lead to a great income.

You'll also discover that your free books will lead people to buy your books that aren't free at the moment, boosting your income. (Having a book that's 'free' is great advertising.) Make sure you publish your free schedule on AMC!!!

  • Making money off of the Amazon platform is very lucrative. There are all sorts of books you can write about ranging from fiction to traditional biographics about different people. With a book in a good topic, you can be making in thousands every single month fro royalties. Trust me, It's nice every once in awhile having your book grow online ad making you money without you ever doing anything in the future.

Go for it just make sure you have quality content, because most people read the comments and rating system on Amazon. I buy all my books from Amazon and won't waste 2 bucks if the book has bad ratings or just a few pages.

I agree with Clearspark in that it ideal to have an audience or at least some way to promote the ebook so that you can be successful if you go down the Amazon path.

I have heard people having success when they have had this support behind them. Its a bit like having affiliates promoting a product launch.

If you have already have experience with SEO and Affiliate Marketing why not create a free ebook and link that to an offer that you make money on?

Back in 2001 I created my first ebook on how to start a pet photography business. Started selling it on ebay for $27.00 Got 15 sales the first week. Every week I tweaked my sales copy and kept putting the price up until it was selling 3 - 5 copies a week at $197.00 each.

Sold well at that price for about 5 years...

If you have a good product sell it yourself because a kindle ebook won't make you much unless you sell thousands of copies. If you write romantic novels Amazon is good... but if you produce top notch non fiction how to advise in ebook form you are better off testing your sales copy and pricing on ebay first... then create a website to sell it yourself for 10 to 20 times the price you would get on Amazon.

That is pretty awesome, I've always heard of people selling eBooks on Ebay but I've never done it.

I know the strategy revolves around sending a media disc to the final buyer once they purchase the item from you.

Does that same strategy still work?

I've done well on eBay in the past with regualr physical products I've outsourced - just curious is that still a viable way to bring home the bacon.

        SteveSki,

Your recommendation sound like a sound strategy. I believe this is what I will try. Let me, ask one question concerning eBay, first. Do you pack and ship the book or do you have a fulfillment system?

I like writing for the Kindle market. I've got 3 books now, and am finishing up my fourth. That book is the first in a serial set of books, with 6 planned.

    Forget eBooks. Why?

    1. Others will steal your content, spin it and sell it as their own.
    2. A lot of IM efforts for only a couple of low-priced sales.
    3. Most niches are saturated, so the competition is really, really stiff.

    Create courses. Why?

    1. Content is a little harder to steal, if done right.
    2. Video marketing is easier, price is higher.
    3. There are less courses than books out there.

    Good luck!

The truth is to make good money selling kindle you need luck and heavy promotion. If you already have a big email list or some kind of following (fb, twitter etc...) then you might see some success, because what you need is high sales volume in a short period of time for the book to climb in rankings. You also need to get lots of reviews of the book.

Some people ive read about have like 100 books published and make barely $1500 a month.

You can get some good quality writers on those websites, I do a fair bit of work on Elance for a bit of side money and also to get experience writing on different subjects. As someone who's both worked and hired on Elance there are a couple of things you need to take into account when you hire over there.

If you are going to hire a writer I always recommend getting samples of their work first - and remember that you get what you pay for - you may get lucky and find someone who is building their reputation on the website or doesn't know that they can charge more yet - but don't bank on it.

Always do a plagiarism check - you don't want to risk getting sued for copyright theft.... it's your responsibility to be certain that it does not infringe any copyrights - ignorance is never a valid defense!!

And if you do luck upon a top quality writer and their work exceeds your expectations, throw them a bonus - why? Because if they are good quality writers then at some point they are going to be able to charge much more than you pay them. By paying bonuses you will gain respect from them because it's something you didn't have to do, plus you play to their ego - everyone likes being appreciated and they will probably want to work for you again because they know you appreciate them. You will also help build loyalty and that is what you want from them because It is going to be easier to retain the services of a quality writer than it will be to go out and try and find another one.

They won't write for you forever once they can command very high fees, but they will write for you a lot longer than they otherwise would have.

That's not always true, I personally would never pay someone that low of a fee because I do think that the value of quality writing is higher. But you do get people willing to work at that low of a price to build their reputation, gain experience or because they don't know how to find clients outside of those websites yet.

Yes, you'll have to shift through a load of rubbish to find them and at some point you won't be able to afford them if they are any good. but while they are gaining experience then why not let them gain it with you?

It's a win-win really, you get the work completed cheaply and they improve their reputation/gain experience.

That's great! I am very happy that you found a great writer to take advantage of. There's a problem with your "proof of concept" though; either you made a lot of money from that writer and continue to pay him/her 3rd world country rates, or you haven't made anything and you're stuck with the cheapest labor possible.

Either way, it's not exactly bragging rights.

The fact that they need money, they have a marketable skill, and don't want to put in all the extra time it takes to sell a book well on kindle. One of my writers has noted a few times how much she appreciates our partnership and how I have helped put food on their table. I don't own her, I pay a wage that both her and I agree to. You are taking advantage of the fact that they don't know how valuable their skill is ad that they are desperate for the money now. They could be earning a lot more than $10 per 1,000 words by writing elsewhere.

That isn't to say that what you're doing is entirely wrong - it is vital for a business to be profitable. But if you're making enough from the books to pay them more, you should (at least in a bonus if it is very good quality) and if you aren't making enough to pay them more then it isn't a very successful, or sustainable, business.

Personally, I would only pay an amount even close to that low if I knew that the feedback was more valuable to the writer than pay and I wouldn't make an ongoing business out of cheap labor.

But that's my opinion, there's no doubt that you can get writers that cheap - the trouble is that at some point either the writers will have to go get a day job "slaving away at a fast foo joint" because what you're paying doesn't pay the bills or they will wise up and find someone who pays what they are worth.

How is their ignorance my fault or taking advantage? They claim to be writers they should know their self worth, and these are ametuer writers or else why the hell would they agree to write for what I pay? They can provide a service, I can provide money. It is as simple as that. If they did not like what I have to offer, they wouldn't come back. I give bonuses, which please their ego and further our partnership. I have two go to writers right now. One in college, one who is a stay at home mom. Both benefit from me hugely.

I agree with other WF members that ideally you need an audience to launch to initially. However amazon can be a great ebook seller but you need to drive traffic to it IMO. Get your ebook launched and then create a Facebook group to promote it.

Sure - started with ebooks, then evolved into higher-end information products, coaching and membership sites.

Vast majority of my ebooks are published outside of Amazon, though I have both physical and ebooks on Amazon. My approach for ebooks on Amazon is primarily as lead generators around higher end products.

That said, more than 75% of my ebook sales are outside of Amazon on Clickbank, and Ejunkie

I've two kindle markets for myself and work with a couple of clients on their kindle projects.

My first book is a book I use to drive people to my site and create authority in my niche.

The second set of books are in a specific niche and account for about 70k worth of sales a year. These are promoted only using press releases and growth hacking/loyalty system.

For those doing courses I think this is a massive market and where the industry will go in the next 18 months but why not have the best of booth worlds and have one of your books on the reading list or sell a course book

We have created and sold more than 14 different ebooks as well as several courses, membership sites, etc...

These days you want to think of an info product (or knowledge product) business rather than just an ebook.

What I mean is that you want to have a strategy to sell a lead-in (lower-cost) product and then have at least one (ideally two) upsell options for the more serious, desperate buyers.

In other words, let's say you have mastered a system of using SEO to get 10,000 visitors a month and get listed well for several top keywords - you could create the ebook around "beginner" methods such as basic page construction, getting inbound links, common mistakes, etc... Enough to give someone the basics to dramatically improve their SEO activity. The ebook could sell for $27

Then you also put together an "Advanced" course where you walk them through some of the key steps through video and perhaps show them some of the top SEO sites - even giving them a basic template - this you could sell for $197 or more...

Finally, you could put together a "Premium" offering where you design the training around a 30-day program with weekly coaching or Q&A calls, some personal reviews + some basic outsourcing services priced at say $597 or $997 depending on how turn-key you make it.

Now, you have multiple options for how you market these - you could take the ebook (or a summarized version of it) and put it up on Amazon for a low price where your objective is not really to make money on that ebook but to provide a funnel into the upsells (which you include inside the ebook)

OR you sell the up-front ebook for $17-$27 and either break-even by running aggressive advertising or give away the majority in commissions to affiliates in order to get WIDE coverage of the ebook - again with the intent of making your money on the back-end.

Having an ebook as "PART" of your knowledge product offering is the key to building a strong product profit stream.

eBooks have made profit for me since way back in 2001. Some are still floating around out there and continue to produce income from the affiliate links within them. Not into it much these days, but do release some under another brand.

I tinkered with some Amazon books and the time versus profit just wasn't there for me. But that is my experience. Have associate that is killing the Kindle market with $0.99 to $1.99 books but he is retired and has nothing else to do

The biggest thing I have learned about ebooks: When including links, use a URL shortening service that you have control over. There will come a time when you will need to change links...

There are many courses about making money selling kindle books, I have taken a few and the main take-away is a good niche you can conquer, create a series of books in the same niche and volume. The more books you get out there the more your name gets recognized. Quality content is a must plus the info must be in demand. Do lots of research then go for it. Just don't stop at one book.

I use payloads and kindle for e-book distribution, and both are super. Most of you will probably use kindle because it is from amazon. Both work great for me. Problem wilt e-books is that there are many poor ones. People need to know that you have a great product and stellar service. Spend a lot of time and money on an epic cover. Those sell books whether it is digital or paper. Also avoid titles that sound like spam. Here is one - magic credit cure.

I like digital products better than physical, overhead costs are much less, allows you to make much more profit. I have not posted any of my own products on Amazon, but have been an Amazon affiliate for a few years. Have not made much with them, but their commissions are also really low.

My experience with an eBook is one that I put together myself, but I am not selling it, I am using it as a free offer when people subscribe to my website's email list. It has done quite well in bringing in subscribers. I think it really helps to get a very nice looking cover image created for it - makes it look interesting and attractive I got my cover made on Fiverr.

Have been selling ebooks and software since 2004 and for the last few years have been publishing on Kindle amongst other platforms and can say that Amazon can produce some income, but nothing to write home to Mom about unless you are writing about some pubescent vampires or wizards.

Ebooks have kinda become a commodity, so I would focus on creating some kind of online courses and use an ebook as a lead generator.

Now...if you are in the affiliate marketing and SEO space....consider having some software created to make whatever you do mostly automated. More bang for your buck as software or SAAS always holds its luster and you can charge more for it.

      Why do I love it?

      1) Free targeted traffic to my sites
      2) I add affiliate links for more revenue
      3) I earn from the books alone
      4) They help position me and I get more clients this way
      5) They are easy to create once you have done one or two you can do way more
      6) They are a great free way to create your passion or share it
      7) They are awesome list builders too!

if you want to know more about my books just type in Greg De Tisi into Amazon. I do use Kindle but you can use various platforms and I am currently writing a book for hard copy which I hope will be a global success. Any questions please don't hesitate to contact me at gregdtc5@gmail.com

Greg, it's against Amazon TOS to add affiliate links to your Kindle books. You may want to sort those out because Amazon could block the books or worse wipe out your account.

To be successful on Kindle you need to build a long term plan. You need a good marketing strategy, you need to name it right and put it in the right categories (I didn't sell 1 copy of the first book I put on Kindle until I changed it into a category with less competition now it's flying), or you can use the free book promotion to build your list and then use that list to sell future books.

Realizing this is an old thread, and seeing some of the questionable responses (like ebooks don't sell anymore), I will offer some advice that is just as timely today as it was several years ago when the OP created this thread:

In most all cases, it is the promotion (marketing) of the material (whether in form of an ebook, course, video, report, or whatever) that determines how profitable and successful the campaign will be . . . moreso than the format chosen for the product, the author's authority, the price point, and all the other characteristics of the product.

So I would have to ask, what have you done to market your product? Or did you just upload it and expect the sales to come flooding in?

Of course most of the time you are not going to hit a home run with just one book. Creat a number of them and see what the market likes and go from there.

Even if you use Kindle to distribute make sure your book is directing them to your website site, squeeze page or......

I'm not saying what you're doing is entirely wrong - lots of businesses do it. It's just not something I'd personally recommend doing and not something I've ever chosen to do myself.

I write fiction ebooks and sell through Kindle direct and several other ebook publishers. It can be a gold mine if you get a hot one.

Putting it on Amazon won't make you much money, even if you did your keyword research properly.
You'll need a list and promote it as well like a madman in order to get sales.

But you'll need to ask yourself; why bother with all that for a couple of bucks in sales, if you can use this content to make a video and sell an e-course for at least 10 times more money?

Hi, I'm about to start with my first ebook on Kindle and was wondering if someone can recommend a program that picks out the best categories and keywords to be shooting for. I saw one program but it was for a PC, I'm on a mac.
Could someone talk about how they decide what type of ebook they're going to write?

I sell several hundred copies of of $0.99-$2.99 books per month (average monthly income of $200-$300). It's not much, but I'll help you as much as I can.

Cover Image: This helps SO much. Even if my content is crappy, I'll still kill it in sales if the cover image rocks. With that being said, don't just skimp out on quality content either (if your'e a bad writer, have it outsourced).

Look up customer reviews on competing eBooks. Look at the negative reviews specifically. if the reviewer says the book was lacking "x, y, and z" then include that in your eBook.

For me, making money on Kindle is more of a numbers game. If you try really hard, you can probably launch 100 books per month at $0.99 cents each. You'd probably make $500 per month in passive income EASY.

A lot of work though LOL.

Get your cover done on Fiverr. Super nice covers there for $5. My eBooks are between 1,500 and 3,000 words each (you can pay someone $15 to $25 to write it for you). And that would be your only expenses pretty much.

    Good luck.

      Thanks.
"You'd probably make $500 per month in passive income EASY."
To me the real question under this line is "for how long this passive income will continue flow". We are talking about a low quality content here, right? I guess it will almost certainly get to a point at which the automated process will loose its energy and eventually burn out.
So in order to "secure" a steady passive income, perhaps one must go with something that will be topical today, but also 10 even, 20 years later. Am I wrong?

    Ive sold ebooks..

...the key is to get rid of the "book" idea

think of it like giving detailed solutions in a pdf..

that being said, does amazon have a "page cap" before a pdf can be called an "ebook"?

Yes. You can make money writing and selling an ebook on Amazon. But it is important that you partner with numerous blogs, websites, newsletters, social media pages that review and promote e-books. The opinion of these reviewers affect ebook buyers. Below are 3 websites/blogs with large traffic:

Kindle Reader: The Kindle Reader Blog
    GoodReads: http://www.goodreads.com
    IndieReader: Advertise with IndieReader

    Good luck!

    Hi.
In my oppinion there are too much ebooks sold in Amazon.
I tried to sell an ebook on ebay, I just made 1 sell lol.
Of course it is not imposible to sell ebooks on amazon. But I think it must be a good one.
Again , this is my oppinion. I can be wrong.
    regards.

The folks I know who are doing well write FICTION, not N-F. ;-) They write multiple books aimed at the same readers, they write in Series or Serial (depending on genre/sub-sub-sub-genre) They meet the readers' expectations, Covers and Titles are genre/sub-sub-sub-genre appropriate, and they know that no single book or even one series will be effective...

There is a pattern that once you reach a certain tipping point, sales begin to grow dramatically... Things HAVE changed since the WF went nuts over Kindle in 2012, but big money is still possible ;-)

How do I define Big Money? Obviously this will vary, so I say -- Life changing money is Big Money ;-)

Of coarse money wont come rushing in quick, i know that anything like this takes time and work
I'd forget Amazon, because of its tax, imposed on you. Focus on promotion yourself and reap 100% of the profit. Personally, I use an automated marketing software that my company developed and leave all the promotion to it, I only have to focus on the product itself.

Why is it that so many have advice and information to share regarding ebook or kindle book production and publishing, yet are so reluctant to offer a link to their work so that we may see examples of their advice and suggestions.

Or is this simply a NO NO

I show plenty of ebooks that I've done in my coaching program.

The problem though is that when when there are many people that go through your program, a lot of these people decide to go in that niche also.

So when you created this book, the niche was absolutely amazing, but now everybody is competing with you in that niche so the niche is not that great anymore.

It is not really a problem, but there are always a few people ( those with the weak mindset, those that are not completely sold to online marketing...You know, those that deep down think it is a scam) sometimes go crazy when they realize that your book in the video is not performing that great.

WHY? IS IT ALL A SCAM? WHY IS IT NOT PERFORMING AMAZINGLY WELL?

Humm maybe because thousands of people went through my videos and hundreds decided to create a book exactly in the same niche you dummy. Do you have the brain power to understand that?

I used to make thousands of dollars per book in the minecraft niche for example, but now everybody is in this niche.

Anyways, that's why a lot of people are not posting their books, especially on a free forum.

This market is becoming saturated in recent times...
But it's still possible to make money through ebooks.
Give off free one with relevant affilaite links in them.

    or

Create a good one in a problematic niches, get affiliates and sell.

I still think courses make more money though but of course it involves more work

      Bullshit.

Why? There are always new trends and new technologies out there.

Few weeks ago nobody knew what Pokemon Go was...Few weeks ago the Iphone 7 was not out....

The world is moving and things are changing fast, and therefore there will always be new niches out there.

You operate from a scarcity mindset but we live in a world of abundance my friend.
