They opted in to you, not who you sell it to.

      Might be a problem

There could be legal implications of selling an email list. Some countries allow it while others forbid it by law.If someone on your list lives in a country with such a law like Data Protection Law, you could be in violation of that law by selling lists that contain addresses of people who have not given you permission to send them email.

Which ones forbid it, Peter? I'm no lawyer, but I haven't heard of it being illegal, anywhere, to sell a "going-concern" business whose assets happen to include a mailing/emailing-list, and it's something that happens all the time, all over the world, I think?

This is a very different question from just "selling a list", which is - as rightly observed above - "problematic" at the very least.

            Alexa,
I am no lawyer too so that's why I did a quick search and found that UK has such a law against this. This is what I just found:

It's not really illegal. It says:

"Other countries, such as the United Kingdom, do have privacy laws that apply to selling emails without the permission of the people on the list."

If you read Terms of Service and Privacy Policy on many sites that collect emails, they state that by submitting your email address you agree to receive promotional emails and your email address may be shared with other parties.

Also, since it was just a line in an article and not a link to actual UK regulations, I could not determine if this was talking about "scraped" emails and if user submitted emails via an Opt-In form are considered to be permission.

Certainly if the plan is to sell the list those terms would be (should be) listed under the Privacy Policy or other agreement.

                Very interesting here.

This is a sticky situation. It seems to me if you are buying a full Company then it would be legal to acquire Customers and Subscribers of that Company since it is part of it.

Sorry, Peter, but (as is rightly already pointed out, above) what you found there doesn't actually confirm the impression you're offering, at all. In my opinion, you're confusing "selling a list" with "selling a business of which one of the existing assets is a list and autoresponder account".

I would be surprised if you could sell your account. I don't know much about Russian laws, but often the TOS of various services forbid you selling your account.

Maybe, as was suggested, you could transfer the email list to another GVO client.

Are these single or double optins, or did you upload a list? That might make a difference as well.

I have done similar (but less subs) but stayed with the same autoresponder (aweber) - so another aweber customer took over my list - there was no problem.

I suppose gvo will agree to this as well.

    Hi,

Try joining some Solo Ad Facebook groups and ask members there if they
would like to purchase some clicks from you.

That way while you're looking for a buyer you're not allowing your lists
    to go cold and unresponsive.
