How would you monetize this domain? (Law niche)

Hi,

I have a domain in the law niche in a city with a population of 2.1 million people. For the sake of confidentiality, let's call it lancasterattorney.com. How would you monetize it?

How many lawyers do 2.1 people need? (Sounds like one of those riddles). What's the 0.1: someone who's just had a positive pregnancy-test?

Personally, I'd approach every law-firm in Lancaster, mentioning all the huge advantages to them of the domain-name, explaining succinctly why they need it, and inviting offers for it. There are plenty of other monetization possibilities, of course, but for myself, that's what I register those domains for.

Great idea... How much do you think you could fetch for a domain like this? I had it for little less then a year and I haven't done anything with it.

And what would be the best way to contact law firms? Phone? Email?

        It's honestly hard to predict.

Two things I can tell you confidently: first, what it's worth to you is what you can sell it for; secondly, it can easily be worth 5 times as much to one person as to another, simply because of the huge differences between the skill-sets people have at identifying, approaching and negotiating with potentially interested parties to whom the domain-name may be worth more because of the nature of their own businesses (in this case, "Lancaster lawyers").

Depending on "Lancaster" and whether we're really talking about lawyers, I'd be wanting to try to make 4-figures for it.

I approach people by email, myself: haven't got the voice to do it by phone.

I'm not in the market for it, myself, because I almost never pay much more than reg-fee for a domain, but from what you say above I suspect it may well be worth something just as a domain-name sale, if you go about it well.

    Alexa has it.

I actually use a similar business model.

    Ideas for you:

    - Sell law firms ad space
    - Rent a single law firm the entire site
    - Setup a lead generation system (become an affiliate for them; check state laws re this)
    - Flip Domain
    - Flip Website

You should be generating leads for lawyers.

I would definitely supply law offices with potential leads. Leads in this niche are very valuable (& lucrative)

I actually promote an Internet Based SMS Platform. We have some members who are actually going to use our platform and 'customize' it for lawyers and Realtors.

The platform comes with full customization & even 'paid' applications.

You can make money in (2) ways with our system:

1- Create High Profile Lawyer Leads

2- Application: Currently we have a $5 application that the more serious leads pay to go further. You can have the option of setting your own prices for applications along with your own questions

PM me if you are interested.

Collecting and selling the leads would be your most profitable option, I believe. Creating a directory and selling the space would be your easiest. Either way, supplement the traffic with paid ads.

Put content on it to rank it. Then rent it out or sell it after it has established SEO value and rankings.

You're not going to sell ad space on it as it is without rankings.

You're not going to be selling leads to attorneys because, as a general rule, that is illegal. You could set up a contact system where attorneys pay a flat rate to advertise and also receive contacts through the site, but again, you need rankings.

You may be over-estimating how much it is worth purely from the name - although another domainer also over-estimating value may buy it.

The legal field is mostly specialized and having a city name by itself is not necessarily valuable. More like a pain in the butt if your family law practice is getting calls from people looking for bankruptcy counsel. A general practitioner may have some use for it. Big firms already branded with their name and domain probably not and they are not going to switch domains, nor would it make sense for a firm with multiple locations.

15 years ago would have been a good time to be selling such a domain. The fact it is available today, as a .com (assuming it is a .com) should tell you something.

If you just want to sell the domain, go head and start mailing law firms (I think your freebie choices of calling and email are not good ideas). Just be prepared to be disappointed about any offers.
