Does Dropping Your Affiliate Link Still Work?

12 replies
I still see the occasional affiliate links on discussion forums/sites and wondered if anyone ever tried this free way of advertising a product.

Can you make a little cash here and there by marketing that way?

What is the major challenge with this? Finding sites that don't remove them?

    I don't know about other forums, but it's a sure way to at minimum get your posts deleted by a moderator and at maximum, get banned here at the WF

    That and quite a few other things: often breaching the terms of service (of the sites where you publish them, the networks whose links you use, the vendors whose products you promote, or some combination of all three of them); being labelled a "spammer"; the fact that it doesn't work anyway (because almost nobody ever buys anything at their first visit to a sales page); strengthening the poor image/reputation that "internet marketers", collectively, suffer from; and so on.

    To earn significant money from affiliate marketing, you need to do three things ...

    (i) Keep your potential customers returning to the sales page (because not so many people buy anthing much at their first visit to a sales page, as mentioned above!);

    (ii) Make increasing sales (ideally at progressively higher prices) to the same "captive audience" who regularly rely on and trust your recommendations;

    (iii) Establish the credibility and trust necessary to do both the above by earning's people respect as a provider of niche-related information.

    Without building lists, of course, you can't do any of the three and you'd just be throwing away almost all the traffic you ever generate that doesn't buy anything immediately.

    You'd just be trying to fill the bath by opening the taps fully but without bothering to put the plug in the hole first. What kind of way to run a business would that be?

    For most people, most of the time, it's just about as simple as that, overall.

    These three threads are more informative ...

    Is it a good idea to spend some time on building a mailing list ?

      I agree, you need to succumb to the fact that building a list is the best way to build a long term, sustainable business online.

    Or you could always just send them to your own landing page first...

    Challenge somewhat-immediately solved

    if your posting informative or genuine inputs on a website or forum where aff links are allowed then it can be profitable. It will never work if your just posting with the purpose of the aff link though, if you know what I mean..

    You dont want to get by and make money "here and there". You want to make as much money as possible and totally dominate your niche into quiet desperation and submission.

    Lol... i'm sorry, i had a Mike Tyson moment LOL.

    No seriously, with the raw affiliate link, here's the thing:

    1) They're ugly

    2) Alot of consumers recognize them (and dont like the idea that you're making money off of them lol)

    3) A serious business can't be run like this.

    Focus on the long haul and longevity in your business. You may feel like you need money NOW on-demand, but trust me... take a steady approach daily and sit back and look at how your internet dream has become a reality for you. Just take your time and get a real site of your own and operate from there.

    A question like this shouldn't even be asked.

    If your approach to this is just to earn a quick buck, then I suggest going back to the drawing board. A lot of marketers would simply use signature links (depending on the forum rules), and send them to a squeeze page.

    If you deliver valuable comments, people are going to resonate with you or at least pick up an "ah ha" moment and will most likely see what else you have to offer via your signature link. It's all about value and not link bombing.

      Don't waste time looking for shortcuts. Instead focus on proper and legitimate marketing that you know other successful marketers have been there and done that as well. Just focus on one thing that works for you then rinse and repeat. Go for long term success because that will ensure making you a more consistent income. And you get to sleep better knowing you have not resorted to unscrupulous means to earn a quick buck here and there.
