Dear all internet marketers!

Do you waste time to find out that what other competitor internet marketers are doing or are you on your own way?

Thank you

    Hey Scott,

My top performing strategies are actually strategies I have seen in the arsenal of other marketers.

I search consistently for ideas and no matter if it comes to SEO, WSO's, Affiliate marketing, I always research, mastermind and implement the ideas I believe in. And till now I can say that 50/50 is the ratio of success/failure. I mean if the time and investment has payed off.

It's definitely a win strategy for me and I believe that no one reinvents the wheel, most of the top marketers copy others and just make the marketing, idea fit their needs and style.

    Funny you ask... nope!

While there's plenty to learn from others (depending upon someone's experience)...

It's more of a: I'd rather get stuff done then see what others are doing.

    Helps to keep me focused.

It's never a bad idea to look at what others are doing, however, you got to start implementing what they are doing and add your own spin to it.

You don't need to reinvent the wheel, but you need to take action, that's all that matters.

Less so now than I used to.

It hasn't always been "wasting" time for me, though. I've learned some valuable things, that way, too.

The difficulty is always in identifying the people by whom one decides to be guided. Doing that successfully requires some judgment and experience - the exact attributes which one most lacks at the outset, when one most needs them. But nobody was born knowing how to do this stuff: we all had our own learning-curves to negotiate, and one way or another they all required inputs from others.

IMO, it's not a waste of time at all to learn what other internet marketers are doing, especially your competitors. Throughout my IM career I have always examined and carefully studied the competition. This does not mean necessarily I tried to copy them, but to learn from them and more often than not - to avoid going head to head against them directly in heavily competitive niches. For example, I used to buy tons of WSOs just to learn tactics and strategies by the vendors; seldom for the "products" being sold.

        I absolutely agree with you,

As in every business, you need to know where exactly your competition is so you can exactly know what your goals will be. This rule is not just valid for the IM industry, but for every niche out there.

Of course we need to be creative and not just copying others.

To be able to position yourself you need to know where your competitors are. Or shortly, if you don't want to be seer in your business, research your competition and always keep an eye on them.

Not sure why you'd suggest it's a WASTE of time and put the question that way, makes it seem like you're being very one sided with the way you're posting things.

I see NOTHING wrong with seeing what my competitors are doing, learning it, then doing it better than them....

  • That is a waste of time unless you're building out a campaign based on someone else's business model.

This is done all the time because this industry is a monkey see - monkey do type of business where you have to follow someones lead to get to the next level.

I take the route of doing things my own way, that includes doing tasks like talking to people, forming positive progressive relationships, and researching the mindset of my target prospect.

I think that trying to figure out what other people are doing will waste more time than necessary. The real thing that get's companies and businesses over the hump - I've come to learn that in order to set yourself apart you have to speak to the WHY of your ideal prospect.

Create an avatar - and do nothing but target that avatar, learn what that avatar eats, learn what that avatar's hobbies are, figure out what that avatar eats, and of course find out what keeps your avatar up at night.

When you do - there will no longer be a need to worry about what the competition is doing because you'll be in a league of your own.

    All the best,
    Michael

At the beginning of my IM journey in 2009 I did, because I was in the dark about most things in this business and needed guidance and a helping hand. Fast forward six years and it's usually the other way about and folk ask me for direction which I enjoy.

It's good to look over your shoulder every once in a while to see what other folk are doing, but if you're still looking for direction after a few years then, perhaps this isn't for you.

    OK, Warriors

Most of you have suggested that it isn’t a waste of time.

    For them,

I would like to change the statement as,

Do you *spend* time to find out that what other competitor internet marketers are doing or are you on your own way?

    And,

    Little more addition as well,

Do you still spend time to find out that what other competitor internet marketers are doing even if you already have found the way of success?

    Thank you.

You're asking about "modeling" . . . setting up marketing and sales systems that others are successfully employing. It makes perfect sense doesn't it? Why invent or "dream up" your whole sales approach when you can see what others are doing successfully or not?

It's what you're doing right now! Finding out what works and trying to avoid the pitfalls and missteps of others.

Watching the competition is only a waste of time if you let it become that. If your observations are valid and put to good use in your own campaigns, then it is obviously not a waste of time. It's smart to know what the competition is doing.

Well, I liked your query. It is a little bit funny. I do not waste my time on other competitor's website, I spend my whole time to get the better ranking of my website in Google, so for this, I follow the digital marketing strategies for getting a lot more traffic and now this time, I hit the point and got the best rank in Google.
