Need some ideas to close out January strong

Hey guys, I was hoping you could give me a little help.

My one site which focuses on the $20 or less niche (DatTwenty) obviously did very well during the holiday months (Nov/Dec) because everyone needed small gifts to give to family and friends.

January has been really slow so far though. I did a decent amount of traffic but the conversion is not even close to what it was (went from 15% to 4%). I was wondering if any of you had some ideas you could throw my way on how to finish January strong.

For example since my site seems to be strong with gift giving, should I begin to market to those looking for gifts for Valentine's day? Or is there something else I can do to finish the month well? Anything will help, thanks guys!

I would categorize the site by commonly searched gifts: him/her/mom/dad/the home/unique gifts/kids etc.

The obvious answer would be drive more traffic: 4% conversion is pretty good, IMO. Especially if you can sustain it with more traffic/conversions.

As a side note, your site doesn't look right on the ipad (background of the images cover the text).

Yea it has something do with the mobile version of the site. I'm trying to figure out how to fix it.

Up-sell, down-sell, and cross-sell to your list of folks that have already purchased from you. Repeat sales to happy customers . . . that's what keeps most businesses in the black during the slow seasons.

You do have a list of web site visitors and buyers don't you?

That's the thing, because it just uses Amazon Associates the only thing I can see is the traffic in and traffic out. I have no clue who is actually doing the buying or anything like that. I also never put much value in a list which is really killing me now because I have sent a lot of traffic and pretty much captured none of it. I am looking to change that and I am going to begin to focus on creating a list and following.

January is really slow since people are still coping up with the holiday season expenses.

  • It's usually like that following the holidays.

So what I would recommend is that you take the route of getting some publicity about your site.

You can use a website like Free Publicity - Connecting Reporters and News Sources - Help a Reporter Out and reach out to tons of journalists who are looking to write a story right now about something like what you have.

Take the route of an online website owner, or online marketer looking to get some related press about my website - and if you can get picked up . . . you'll for surely be getting way more targeted and quality subscribers.

There is also a service here on the forum that syndicates your site via Press Release and can get your release shown on about 20K sites or more. All online news related sites, and high quality results.

    All the best,
    Michael

You can still catch the valentines wave I think. Couple of days left.
