Where is your favorite place to find talented programmers?

We're looking to hire a talented developer to join our team, but as you would expect, the going is slow... We've tried to pick up some from elance and odesk (which is fine for small tasks and "decent" programmers), but I've yet to find a "superstar", which is what we need.

Do you guys have anywhere specific you turn when you're looking for REALLY good programmers?

  • Hey Brad

Just a heads up - if you are looking for superstars only and you find one who is an "emerging" superstar send them our way.

We agree though that finding the good ones who will also stick with you (and not steal your stuff) is getting harder and harder.

Hopefully the "cream" will rise to the top again.

    Regards

    Bronwyn and Keith

      Hi Brad, Bonwyn & Keith,

I've had very good luck hiring out of Pakistan. I've had many times greater success than I have in India.

The #1 place to find them is right here: Java Jobs in Pakistan, Latest Java Jobs Pakistan - ROZEE.PK

You might have to look specifically for the language you need. I was doing a desktop app last and so I had the Java url saved. But once on the site you can navigate around.

      Have a good one, Patrick

I've found my best developers on Craigslist and Monster. I don't mess with Odesk or Elance , those are the second string devs.

If you find a good one, pay them well and do not take them or their time for granted. Mess up on either one of those and you will be back to looking for a developer.

There is about a 1% unemployment rate in the Tech sector with developers. The good ones simply get picked up quick and do not stay unemployed long.

Thanks for the info. So I'm assuming you don't mind hiring US programmers?

Totally irrelevant to your thread but your SEO course in your sig could use some update as it recommends to submit your site to a mass amount of web and article directories in lesson 4, and mass user profile links and sig links in lesson 5. I also see you mention broad/exact phrases, which isn't even available in Adwords anymore, it shows the same number for all so all nice and well but a course from 2011 isn't helping many in 2015. SEO evolved.

As for ontopic: I'd recommend http://www.sohomwebmedia.in/

They are based in India with a team of 20-30 programmers, they did several projects for me already.

Well, What I suggest is not to use a freelancer site, knowing the caliber of your business it might be a better option to go to a coding forum and post your job there. This way you will be getting quality people.

Here are a few I belong to. CodeProject - For those who code VBForums - Visual Basic and VB .NET Discussions and More! you can post a job and will find a lot of mvp and the like programmers. If it was just php then Jay vasdewani is also highly recommended I have worked with him as have most folks we know

I find good, inexpensive programmers at my local community college/university nearby. They are always looking for projects to turn in and if they ever encounter a problem, they have an instructor to help them. I usually will approach the head of the department and ask for referrals.
