IMO, stick to .com, then .net. I wouldn't buy anything else personally (well, I wouldn't buy a .net, either).

Just because dog.com is valuable, it doesn't mean dog.ca is valuable. How many .ca websites have you gone to? I don't think I've ever been on one.

If you are just talking about the domain without any type of back-links then .com is the most profitable. I don't think the dot ca would have any value because most people wouldn't know about it. They are used to dot com, dot net, etc.

With very few exceptions, domain names have no intrinsic value, especially those with the less familiar extensions.

There are new extensions coming out all the time. Does that mean you can just register popular names on the new extensions and get rich? Of course not.

A domain name carries no value - it is what you do to develop the domain that matters.
      • Get lots of traffic coming to a domain - that will increase it's value.
      • Start generating steady monthly income to a domain - that will increase it's value.
      • Load a domain with lots of unique content - that will increase it's value.
Stop thinking that you're going to get rich without doing any work.

Typically it's worth almost nothing, by comparison.

And quite often, with big commercial sites, the other extensions have value only to the owner of the trademark anyway, because nobody else could use them without infringing their legal rights (which is often why they're so readily available to register).

        This.

I make quite a bit of income, each year, from "domaining", and I can tell you that there's plenty of work involved in it, and a big learning-curve: it's very much a skill-based business.
