Dirt cheap hosting - $5/year

Hello folks,

Pronet is currently offering crazy cheap hosting at just $5/year

They've got a couple bad reviews online, but so far I've experienced some quality customer service. It seems they have cleaned up their act. For something non-mission-critical, this would be perfect.

Just go to:

They may offer this now, but I don't think they could stay in business very long. Sounds like fly by night.

i think they are just trying for market domination-- after all, once you are with a hosting provider, most people don't switch.
it's also a continuity product; if you forget to cancel before the year is up, your hosting will continue for over $100/year or whatever
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[983897].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Andy Fletcher
Yeah. It's a continuity thing. Hardly anyone moves their sites. It's too much hassle. So once they've got you, you're locked in.

Oh and be warned. The prices they list on their package page are the setup fees. The per month charge is higher. So when it renews in a year it costs a lot more than you expect.

I'd be afraid. 9 times out of 10 if hosting is cheap there's a good, or bad as the case may be, reason for the low price.

Quality hosting underpins your viability as an online business person. I think it's important to choose your provider carefully.

It's HostGator for me all the way too. I can run any kind of scripts that I want to there without any problems at all.

I went through 5 different host and had trouble with all of them until I found HostGator. I haven't had anymore trouble since I moved all of my sites to HostGator.

I will have to second that. I know of websites that were completely lost on their servers; their "own" WP installation is a nightmare (you cannot move it or back it up) etc.

1and1 is not top of the line. The interface is horrid, the support is worthless and it's hard to run certain aps. For a one page sales letter, they are fine but nothing else.

It's true that it's only $5, but if you're going to test out the service on that basis, make sure it's in a way that can't lose you business if there are problems. If you put a revenue generating website on the service and you get significant downtime, that's when you can lose more than your initial investment. Also, you may have to factor in time spent dealing with support - time is money, and I've lost a fair bit of it on hosts with rubbish support.

If you want to try it out, I suggest putting sites that are not your bread and butter and test it out for a few months. It does not hurt to also have a backup clone of your site on another hosting provider so that you can quickly switch over if things go bad.

However, if you are hosting blogs and forum, things won't so straight forward.

$5 a year? The catch is after 1 year they may charge a lot more and at that time you are just lazy and pay whatever they charge. Their web site did not mention if this is only for the first year and what the rate will be after that.

BTW, using your affiliate link in a post is against the forum rule.

Guys, we need some research here. I went to their web site and do a test booking, the cheapest one is about $96 a year. $4.95 is the set up fee.

That means their rate is $8 a MONTH after one year. You can only host 1 domain and up to 5 MySql database which are very restrictive indeed.

Why not pick other hosts like hostgator plan which is cheaper and proved to be reliable by many folks here? $5 a year is just a marketing trick.

It COULD be very well the case that they provide good hosting for the price.

For me, "good hosting" is not determined by the price...but by running my sites and see what problems i run into..if you have a simple sales page or XSP site...well sure, no problem. But if it gets more complex like wordpress or PHP scripts..you never know unless you tried.

As Mikey says, your sites are your bread and butter! If someone is that cheap there is a chance that a LOT of script-kiddies and bad neighborhoods host there too...which could result in down-times...bandwidth problems, things like that which could also affect your site. (Since you're on shared hosting). I try to avoid such mainstream hosters usually. One buck or two a month or a year..shouldnt be a criteria for an IM to host their sites.

I used to subscribe to cheap hosting with Dreamhost about 3 years ago. I learned (the hard way) that my sites were up only about 80% of the time. Up until I discovered that, I was telling everyone how "great" they were despite the occasional bad review online.

I recommend you setup a free account with SiteUptime - Website Monitoring Service like I did 3 years ago.

If your host can keep 99% uptime, recommend them. If not, move your sites ASAP!

i'm using my $5/year account for site development -- so that my engineers and I can communicate about the project-- as a way to host on something that I own instead of my developers' servers... plus the developer will have access to this sandboxed area only, instead of giving him access to my production server with whatever else I have going on there. (actually this last point is theory-- my production server doesn't yet exist-- which is great; i don't have to pay real money yet.)

edited to add: i need some features not provided by free hosts (as far as i know) such as emails for my domain

don't dismiss a good deal so easily; you could find great uses for it

$5 a year? I wouldnt touch that with a 10 foot pole. Its probably someone just splitting up a server they have. so yeah you'll get it for 5, but you'll end up sharing a server with like 90 other people and by the time all is said and done, your site will spend more time down than up and when its up it will move like mud because of all the sharing of resources.

An online business is similar to your a brick and mortar when it comes to a host. You wouldn't set up shop in the real world in some place that only charged like $20 a month in rent would you? hell no, you would run screaming into the night thinking (and probably rightly so) that there is obviously a catch.

guys I had been thinking to give pronet a try has anybody tried it yet?? as for the hostgator guys at BHW had been claiming that hostgator's server got infected with trojans all over , resulting in getting flagged as bad sites by mcaffe and other security sites
Steer clear, youll pay for it in the long run and their banking on that id.. Its to much work to change hosting companies, so after that first year youll be screaming for help Im sure theyll start hitting you with some hefty fees. Just go with hostgator, you cant go wrong there!

It possible they are rebuilding the business after some bad experiences by customers.

I had a host I used for several years and was exceedingly happy with. Then the hosting company was bought out (not announced but wasn't hard to see what happened) and both service and quality deteriorated rapidly. Did I move my sites - darn right I did.

To rebuild a reputation requires a lot of work. If a host with complaints was bought out, new owners might well run great specials to build a new customer base.

I wouldn't use it because I don't need more hosting right now but it's a great deal for someone trying to get started in IM on a very small budget.

Well that initial poster must be a newbie to IM or has plenty of time to spend/risk.

While $5.- a year is obviously cheap, and the host might be OK, to say "use this to build stuff you can afford to loose" - or so is ridiculous.

Heck, if I wanna only test things, I go right away with Blogger or WP or Weebly - for FREE.

Why should I spend countless hours building something on a host which maybe make me lose my business if he has a bad day ?

There is no time to play games in IM, at least not for me.

So IF you like to build something, use a reliable host, and if you wanna only play around, go right away with free stuff.

Imagine you build some on that $5.- bucks host, and you make a KILLER with it ?

Each day yo run to church and pray that it will stay online. No way.

    Hi Summerm

I'd be cautious, as I believe that generally (and I accept that there will be exceptions) you get what you paid for. I tend to go with reputable providers Hostgator; Go Daddy, etc) , as my time is too important to deal with hassles of providers who do not offer 24/7 service, or other support etc.

wanted to give everyone an update.

they have been fantastic as a development server and i'm grateful for the cheap offer-- WHICH IS STILL RUNNING. in fact a friend of mine is now hosting his company website here.

      - customer service has been excellent. my engineers often need new things installed by root-- they take care of it, no problem. in fact i've sent them several lame issues and they haven't lost patience yet. (there is one outstanding problem we've been having related to server memory problems occasionally causing one of my apps to crash, but it's not reproducible and difficult to pinpoint the problem.) they haven't been totally upfront when there is downtime for me, but when i probe they will give me the reason etc.

      - uptime has been great. not 100% consistently, though, according to my monitoring service. there have been several week runs with no downtime at all. and then a few minutes down, resulting in 99.99% uptime. twice total it has been down for a few hours, one of those nearly a day. one was a denial of service attack.

considering i don't have much experience with hosting, i'm not sure whether the two points above are standard. especially the second-- would you expect 100% uptime over nearly a year, for a low cost hosting provider? i doubt it.

now for a public server, i'm still on the hunt for a good solution. i want something that can scale up fast and even support traffic spikes (maybe something quick to move to a cloud infrastructure when the scaling starts ), but have an initial very low monthly price. drupal awareness would be even better. i hesitate to host on this dirt cheap host because of the rare downtime--not sure if I am being unreasonable though.
