What was your First Step?

I have been wanting to get into the online business thing for years now. I find it fascinating, challenging, and exciting all at the same time. I know I'm NOT going to be an overnight millionaire by any means

I will say however that I am completely new at this, but where there's a will there's a way right?! So I'm just curious as to how everyone else got started? What was your FIRST step?

Also does anyone have any advice on the best way to learn? Any good books or online resources. I've looked at some online stuff, but majority acted like I could get rich overnight, and I figured it was a scam so decided to pass on that. So I figured I'd ask for personal opinions.

    Hey Darcey hows it going!

Im in the same shoes at the moment. I have been following a few internet marketers for a couple years now just pretty much observing and being inspired. This year I decided to just jump in rather then keep waiting.

Honestly I don't have much to share because im brand new as well, but what I have done so far is watch a shit loads of motivation and marketing videos lol.

As for inspiration, I would strongly recommend watching Les Browns videos that you can easily find on youtube. That man is a gold mine. He's one of my top favorite inspirational speakers. Trust me he will get you going.

For marketing resources, I follow zach crawford. Hes a very honest and straight forward guy. His website is psychologicallyunemployable dot net . Sorry dont know if im allowed to post links in here because once I got banned for doing it lol.

Theres also Jonathan budd (my second favorite marketer), Rob fore, Michelle and bill pescosolido and rob kiyosaki,

So far I've got a blog and squeeze page setup. Im currently working on creating content for my blog. I would advise you to do the same. Look in to squeeze pages as that's one of the first things you need if you already have a business or product to market.

I hope that helps you! if you have more questions feel free to ask. Join me on facebook, we can learn and work together!

Hey Darcy, there are several ways to get started in internet marketing, but if you want longevity and consistency whatever method you choose has to have a list building component to it.

I know this is probably the most "unsexy" thing you'll hear, but building a list is what generates you consistent income and pays the bills month after month.

How you do it is up to you. You could just send traffic (paid and free) to a squeeze page and start building a list of people, offering something of value in return for the opt in. Another popular route would be product creation, and building a buyers list of people who purchase your product. A list is a lot more valuable when it is composed of buyers, but this is by no means the only way of building a list.

Another longer and slightly more circuitous route would be build a blog and a following -- this is a bit more involved and time consuming, but you'll build rapport and a responsive list by doing this.

Darcey, congrats on making due on your promise to get involved in Internet Marketing. As others have said, there are many different ways to start.

I would advise your first step being seeing if you can market something online you are genuinely interested in. Reason being, if it is something you are passionate about, your work output will be twice as much as twice as effective. It will also help you skip the learning stage of products or services as you will already know about the subject.

Search for what interests you in Youtube, Blogger, Wordpress, etc. What kind of competition is there? Does it only have 100 videos online or 1,000? Things like that will help you determine if it is worth your time and effort.

My very first step was making a website. Then another. Then the one I am on now. I had no idea what I was going to sell on the website I have now, I sold various things, but ended up finding a theme, and of course eventually made a living.

The first two websites I made didn't make me any money, but they also didn't cost me any money. I learned a lot from doing them. They were not a waste of time.

I am not into the idea of planning, it seems to be a waste of time, plan as you go, or you won't ever go anywhere. Best plan is to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

My first step was to start a website in a subject I was passionate about. Back in 2005, I didn't know a whole lot so I started a Blogger blog. That blog is still up even though I don't post on it and it still brings in Adsense revenue. However, I had no idea what I was doing. It was a great learning experience, though, and I am glad I did it. I wouldn't trade the experience of having gotten started for anything.

Call me crazy, but before I created a website, built a list or got into affiliate marketing, I first came up with a plan. Not a long-winded business plan, but nevertheless a real plan about what I was going to do, who my customers were likely to be, what my value proposition was going to be, what my costs were going to be, what my revenue streams were going to be, etc. If you're serious about creating an online business -- and not just trying to make a few bucks here and there -- I think this is essential.

As for resources, while he writes primarily for the tech startup world, I highly recommend reading Steve Blank. His article in the Harvard Business Review "Why the Lean Start-Up Changes Everything" (https://hbr.org/2013/05/why-the-lean...ges-everything) is available for free and is a quick read but is packed with great ideas on how to approach starting a new business. No, it won't teach you anything about internet marketing per se, but in my opinion the techniques and methods specific to IM should only be learned and mastered after you have a solid idea of what you're going to use them for in the first place.

Darcy congrats on deciding to do something. You are wise to not jump in without doing your research. The best advice I can give is to educate yourself and if the funds allow find yourself a coach/mentor someone you can trust. You will find lots of good info in the forum and when you find a system method that appeals to you go with it and work hard till it works

For starters, try becoming an affiliate. You can either use a free platform like blogspot or others, or invest a few bucks a year for hosting and your domain name. There are many websites that you can join and become an affiliate.

Wow your story is like mine. I used to buy all the online stuff and after I think a year, I had spent atleast $13000 and no income, it was a sickness I was suffering from known as "the shiny object syndrome" I started with fiverr and then that was it, once I knew how to make $1 it was easy to make $100. that first dollar made me very happy.
I realised one thing one lesson very important - for any business model to work consistency is important, testing tweaking and optimising is important.
I then vowed that no newbie under my care will go through what I went through.

That being said and done very important thing is to start somewhere and take action and fruits will be seen sooner than you think.

      Hello Darcy,
I know this has been said but it is worth repeating.

DON'T do what I did 7 years ago and put up Blogs without inviting people to be a Subscriber to your Optin.

It is a great way to build a relationship with Prospects and Customers.

Remember, when you build a List you have access of a push of the button for traffic anytime and anywhere you are

The first step in everything is to learn different angles and recipes. If you don't see the full picture but only one version of it you don't really understand everything.

So make sure you learn and read everything you can about the subject you are interested in and start looking at the different aspects in different viewpoints of the same subject.

Only after this you can start applying it because you get a deeper understanding of.

Darcy, the best way to learn IM is to actually do it.

Also, what i'd recommend is to focus on building an actual business and not run towards easy money!

The first step is to acquire the right mindset. Be ready to fail knowing that it will only help you succeed. Read about those who have been successful and browse through their blogs where some of them have given their personal experiences.

Once you are confident and sure about what you want to do, make a plan and stick to it. The most common reason why people fail is because they move on to the next shiny object.

My first step was walking around a flea market trying to decide what type of a stand I was going to get for whatever business I started. Luckily, I came around to Internet marketing.

    That was 12 years ago.

My first step probably wasn't the best step as i tried silly things looking back.

But what i enjoy is the product creation side of things and then seeing it out there in the market place.

Depends what you are passionate about - affiliate marketing, video creation, youtube, CPA, all of these work - but you just need to have a strategy that is simple enough to stick to and effective enough to bring you the results you desire.

The very best of luck to you!
