Anyone want to help brainstorm some simple "prefixes and suffixes" you can add to a keyword based domain name, when your main keywords are taken?

This would be genric words that go before or after the keywords to create a uniue domain that isn't taken.

For example, if your keywords are "blue widgets" but bluedwidgets.com is taken, you could add "4u" after, to create bluewidgets4u.com.

Suffixes:
4u
2u
247
411 (in the US we dial 411 for information. 411 is now slang for info".
city
discounts
specials
deals
reviews

Prefixes:
good
best
goto
get
saveon

With a decent list, anyone should be able to get a variation of the prime keywords of their choice.

Any ideas?

I suffix I like is "resource" or "planet"

      ex:
      bluewidgetresource. com
      dogtrainingresource. com
      dogtrainingplanet. com

To me it seems to imply a portal where the surfer can get valuable information.

But heck, what do I know?

Rather than manually use a list, I've had allot of success finding good keyword domains with this free website:

It automates the process and in most cases provides more options than I can even begin to use.

You're very welcome. I forgot to mention that sometimes the bulk registration search function with G.D. gets hung up (that can be a little frustrating) but, for the most part NameTumbler.com has been my favorite for brainstorming domains.

Congratulations on your new domain generator. I spent a few minutes with it and quickly came up with several good domains. I particularly like your dummy-proof instructions. Two thumbs up.

If my niche phrase isn't available in a domain, I'll go find a new niche phrase. Just makes good sense SEO-wise not to add words to your phrase, even if it's to get an available domain.

I know that goes against the grain of what's being said here, but it's just my two-cents!

      Hi Tinker,

Actually, that's the point of this thread...What if the best SEO keyword phrase is taken?

One option is to choose another, as you suggested. However, this phrase many not have the SEO potential of the first cholice.

Another option is to add a something to the domain name so it's unique, while still containing the exact search phrase.

If i am going for a product related domain name then adding 'pro' to the end or something similar is always a good tactic (providing you are allowed to use the product name).

Then its easy money from there on! Often people will also mistake your site for the actual products site and give you backlins too, which of course is great!

This thread is great but it does kind of beg the question that Tinkerandpo alluded to.. Does a prefixed or suffixed niche phrase actually have the same SEO benefits as a niche phrase on it's own? My own testing reveals a lot of contradictions and I have to say, I am still not decided on this yet. Here is what I have found...

      1. A keyword phrase that gets searches when used as a domain (either .com, .net or .org) is a lot easier to get ranked on Google for with little backlinking effort.

      2. When a suffix or prefix is added and it is still a searched for phrase then you can rank easier for that particular phrase ahead of the un-prefixed phrase. In other words, the domain topbluewidgets.com will be a lot easier to rank highly for the phrase "top blue widgets" than "blue widgets".

      3. A keyword phrase used in the URL as a directory, filename etc will generally still benefit from the same SEO benefits as if it were used as the domain name. For example, widgetsforall.com/bluewidgets.html can still have the same benefits as bluewidgets.com with regards to easier ranking.

However, as always with Google although generally the above points are true I have also had many keyword domains that are a lot more difficult to rank highly for. There are a lot of factors involved here of course with regard to on page and off page SEO, quality of backlinks etc.. What are other people's experiences of keyword domains versus pre(suf)fixed domains?

These are actually not good prefixes because the customer cannot remember which one of these it was. One of my clients went to the expense of changing their company name because they were using one of these and finding that even their actual customers forgot which they were and ended up doing business with their competitor who had the other domain.

This thread is almost 7 years old and with the number of new domain extensions since 2009, finding a good domain may be a bit easier.

However, over the past 7 years many of the "main" keyword-based domains have already been taken. And, the newer extensions can be expensive. Not to mention any domain that isn't a .com will likely kill any type-in traffic, sending it to your competitor that has the .com version.

There's still some great stuff here that is helpful for anyone looking for a good domain name.
