To me it seems to imply a portal where the surfer can get valuable information.

It's easy to walk a fine line of ethics doing this, but if one takes care it can be accomplished tastefully and ethically.

I like this thread! What about 101? As in basic education (math 101, etc.) This is actually what I ended up with for my fitness information site.

you can use Domain Name Generator and Search - MakeWords.com to make out your domain name.

This is a great point...This isn't limited to just domains, but also for stuff like lenses and Hub pages.

One that I've used before is ASAP. For example, LoseWeightASAP (not sure if that's taken...).

don't really do a lot of domain intensive stuff, but for people constantly
doing keyword research and looking for new keyword based domains, this

Actually, that's the point of this thread...What if the best SEO keyword phrase is taken?

One option is to choose another, as you suggested. However, this phrase many not have the SEO potential of the first cholice.

Another option is to add a something to the domain name so it's unique, while still containing the exact search phrase.

I use google stop words as well. Do pretty good with "insider" and "pro".

In general, I think using - or _ or adding small words like "my" is the best alternative. In some cases, domain name doesn't even matter- it's all about the content.

This thread is great but it does kind of beg the question that Tinkerandpo alluded to.. Does a prefixed or suffixed niche phrase actually have the same SEO benefits as a niche phrase on it's own? My own testing reveals a lot of contradictions and I have to say, I am still not decided on this yet. Here is what I have found...

1. A keyword phrase that gets searches when used as a domain (either .com, .net or .org) is a lot easier to get ranked on Google for with little backlinking effort.

2. When a suffix or prefix is added and it is still a searched for phrase then you can rank easier for that particular phrase ahead of the un-prefixed phrase. In other words, the domain topbluewidgets.com will be a lot easier to rank highly for the phrase "top blue widgets" than "blue widgets".

3. A keyword phrase used in the URL as a directory,filename etc will generally still benefit from the same SEO benefits as if it were used as the domain name. For example, widgetsforall.com/bluewidgets.html can still have the same benefits as bluewidgets.com with regards to easier ranking.

However, as always with Google although generally the above points are true I have also had many keyword domains that are a lot more difficult to rank highly for. There are a lot of factors involved here of course with regard to on page and off page SEO, quality of backlinks etc.. What are other people's experiences of keyword domains versus pre(suf)fixed domains?

These are actually not good prefixes because the customer cannot remember which one of these it was. One of my clients went to the expense of changing their company name because they were using one of these and finding that even their actual customers forgot which they were and ended up doing business with their competitor who had the other domain.
