In a Dilemma: Sell video product as membership or just download it on thank you page?

I'm really not sure what the majority of people do here.

At first I was planning on offering the videos as part of a membership site, I have optimize press and I had it all set up to go.

The benefits I could see from this were:
1. The member has to come back to my blog every time they wanted to watch the videos, so it would only build our relationship more.
2. I am able to easily capture their emails and send them messages throughout the course, further building our relationship.

Here's my dilemma.

This is a video course I feel like I will be continually upgrading over time and selling for a higher price. If that's the case, isn't it kind of hard to do as a membership site, completely changing things around? And therefore, the one I'm selling now would be become obsolete 3-5 years down the line, and I'd probably want to just take the membership site down because nobody is logging in anymore. (But out of obligation I should keep it up...)
Also, it's not a monthly recurring product or anything, the customer could go through it all in a couple of hours.

So the alternative is just to provide a download link on a thank you page.
If I were to do this, could I make the thank you page an optin page, get their email, and then send them the product?

Let me know what you think would be best. This is the first product I am selling.

Thank you!

    A few things:

One: Sell it as one year of access only. No one says you have to give them lifetime access. Within the year they get the updates. At the end of the year, offer them another year for a discounted price.

Two: Sell it as a monthly fee in perpetuity (till they unsubscribe). That way they are paying for new stuff all the time.

Three: Sell it as a physical DVD/Thumb Drive which means you can sell updates to them later. Not sure if this would work with the MMO and IM crowd though

I personally would do it as one or two.

You could do a membership. Limit the amount of videos they can watch per day. Bill them in 6-12 month increments (with auto rebill). Make sure to use a membership security script that auto bans on different ip logins, too much bandwidth, etc.

What's best for the customer? What gives him/her the most value for the dollar? What is the easiest and most intuitive way to deliver your videos to the customer?

It's not about you or what you want. Do what's best for the customer and you will never lack for people wanting what you offer.

I think if you are selling a product that will become dated, and you don't intend to sell forever then just deliver the videos on a thank you page (and of course make sure to sell other things on that thank you page too!)

If you're creating something that's going to be around a long time, then go down the membership route.

And you mentioned providing updates in a membership site - that's not a problem, it can be done. It actually gives members a very good reason to stay members - just make sure you are continually communicating the updates to the members. ie via email, Facebook group etc.
