  • It's short for Massively Multiplayer Online game. The best example might be World of Warcraft.

The currency is in-game money that players use to buy items in-game. There are people who will either play the game themselves with multiple accounts, do what is called "farming" for in game resources and sell them for this currency. What they now do is build a site that sells this currency for real money.

Then you have others who pay people to play for them to collect the resources. I have heard of individuals who pay very small amounts of Western cash to Chinese and Koreans to have them spend their real life time playing the games so the individual can get the currency to be sold online.

The thing you need to be concerned about is each game company usually has rules about the selling of their currency. Some allow it, while others will ban an account of known currency sellers.

I sued to play a game called Ultima Online. People would actually sell their accounts on Ebay for money, some could cash in for $500. Later on, the game developers caught on and started notifying Ebay about these and Ebay would pull the auctions because it broke EA's terms of service.

    Hope this helps...

If I am to buy the game. How do I get my currency delivered to me. Is it both physical or only online currency?

I could be completely wrong about this, but I think real life game currency selling (or at least trading) is allowed or tolerated in world-of-warcraft. About 700 gold is worth 1 American dollar (USD) or something along that line.

Allowed or not it's not a very ethical way to make money, but there are hardcore people who take the currency seriously. When I was doing on-line gaming on steam with a clan, I had personally been offered WOW gold in place of real life money for technical tasks I was doing (maintaining websites, etc.). So, it happens.

You would need to purchase the game, install it on your computer and then pay the monthly subscription price.

The currency for the game is all in-game. Your character collects it and can trade it to other players or use it for in-game merchandise.

The typical way sites deal with in-game currency sales is to create a website where someone can buy a specific amount of currency let's say it's gold. Your site would have a cart where people would pay via paypal for 1 million gold (the price you determine). At that point, it's up to you as the seller to get in-game and deliver the gold to the buyers character.

There have been numerous scams setup doing this (where the seller never shows up). So it does take some in-game marketing to build a reputation as a respected seller.

If you are not familiar with gold selling or the games you want to do it in then I probably wouldn't recommend it, its full of kids, scammers and charge backs.

I used to make about $150 per day selling runescape gold I made using bots that did the work for me while I slept but it could be a lot more hassle than it was worth at times.

I actually play wow and people have been farming gold since the game came out. I think we might see a new wave of currencies that could rival bitcoin. A lot of online transactions for games are happening online and there could be a new surge of crypto currencies.

Coming from someone who sold Ultima Online gold for $15 per million on eBay back in 1996, I have to say it's nothing new.

A google search shows Cryptocurrencies coming into play in 1998, but nothing decentralized till 2009.

As for rivaling Bitcoin... Game currencies are only as valuable as the attached game allows. Bitcoin, on the other hand, can be used at all sorts of places; Amazon, Overstock.com, TigerDirect, and even Subway!!

I don't think any amount of WoW gold is going to be accepted as payment for your Five Dollar Foot Long.

It's been a while since I last played WoW, but the usual method is that the seller uses the in-game mail to send the gold to the buyer.

But. It's a crap shoot. Lot's of players who buy gold, don't get it. Or, worse, end up getting their accounts hacked and the gold and all the rest of their gear removed. (A lot of gold sellers actually get the gold they sell this way, and use stolen credit cards to open the accounts in the first place.)

Its ultimately play money! as said above cryptocurrencies are the only real online currency out there, with bitcoin being the daddy! some say bitcoin is dying, yet the experts say it hasn't even started! Cryptocurrencies are very interested in and I'd recommend anyone to start taking them seriously! as early adopters may reap massive benefits a few years down the line! Bitcoin is getting adopted more and more everyday from real world merchants! its not a case of IF, more WHEN, and whilst we wait, trading altcoins (alternatives to bitcoin) has been very lucrative for me and I knew nothing about them a year ago, but still made a fortune and with a very exciting coin about to release something never done before, I'm predicting another fortune about to be made!!!

It is nothing more than monopoly money at this point, about as worthless as the U.S. dollar is in reality, so who knows what the future holds for alternative currencies.

    Success to all,

Neal Stephenson's novel ReaMde is partly about gold mining for profit. Dozens of kids in China just mine for gold all day. That god is in turn sold to game players.
