What are these paper.li things I'm seeing?

One of my blog posts recently got picked up via Twitter and published on a paper.li aggregator page.

paper.li/SteadyOptions_/1417484725

I've seen a few of these things recently.

They basically appear to scrape together content on a focused topic from another site.

What purpose do they serve for their creators (they don't contain many adverts), and why do they have these odd looking URLs as though they might be academic papers?

Do they ever rank in search engines?

I suppose if you had a content site that contained advertising, it would be a useful addition that would give your site visitors to numerous links content... much of which can be hand-picked by you, if you choose to.

I have my paper embedded into my site, but on my site it doesn't really serve any useful function.
