Possible to sell edible items online?

I have a friend who made really really good and absolutely delicious chocolates. I would say it is one of the best chocolates that I have ever tasted. However, my friend operate from home. All edible products made by my friend are home made. So, there are no stores and no shops. There are also no registered company.

If I were to help my friend to sell chocolates online, do you think it is possible? Any ideas?

I am thinking of taking the route of FB Ads + List Building.

Feel free to share your opinions.

Thanks.

Thx, sparrow, for your reply. Do you personally know of any businesses who operate in a small scale and sell their edible products online? I am trying to have a look at their business model.

      Thanks.

You could do a google search for companies that are doing this (selling chocolate and other edibles). I expect there are many. See what they are doing and see if it works for you. One thing to kind in mind is that chocolates could potentially melt during shipping so you have to make sure your process is going to work without that being an issue.

It's very commonly (and sometimes very successfully) done, but there are all sorts of often-complicated, location-dependent regulations, licensing and compliance issues. Appropriate legal advice is generally essential.

      • I definitely can work.
In my country many people have this kind of small not registered businesses, but I'd get an advice from lawyer first. I know, chocolate doesn't get spoiled easily, but still, it's edible product, so at some point you can get into trouble with local authorities. So you need to know what to expect.

For this kind of business I'd advice some simple website with online store. Wordpress + eCommerce can be installed by anyone, you don't need any special knowledge.
Additionally Facebook page, where you can also sell your products and promote them. Don't forget about holiday sales and promotions.
Try searching for local free online advertising boards for selling some small goods. Local forums may also be very useful.
Facebook Ads - the best choice might be very local targeting. Your city or a probably region/state.
And don't forget to get customers e-mails.

Take care of licensing first and foremost.

Depending on where you live, this may, or may not, be legal. He's going to need a business license etc and most food products to be sold commercially (ie to a grocery store, or on any scale bigger than kids bake sales) needs to be made in a commercial kitchen. The good news is that most cities have space at commercial kitchens available for a nominal fee.

IMO, there are certain regulations that you must take into account before selling homemade chocolates online. Think of it this way: would YOU buy chocolates from someone you don't know and don't know how clean their kitchen is?
Can you two partner up and open up a small business? It would inspire a lot more confidence to potential buyers.

If you want to import large quantities sure, but it would be easier to just find a distributor in the US and buy from them.

Its doable, but there's a lot of legal stuff to care of. Food products fall under the "Fair packaging and Labeling Act.". I'm guessing you'll have to talk to a legal guy to figure out the legal aspect.

If you can manage to control perishability selling edible items online is a good idea. You can use PPC to drive traffic to your product pages and earn a good profit.
