A lot of us have been wondering how twitter plans to make money..Just stumbled on a story at techcrunch

A text from the report...

"a pitch for a reality television show called Final Tweet, earlier this morning"

Here's the actual story:

Twitter’s Financial Forecast Shows First Revenue In Q3, 1 billion users in 2013

Enjoy,

They're already making money on the Japanese site (which you can't access unless you have a Japanese ip) by showing ads on the Twitter site itself.

Interesting...it's been a long time coming I suppose & I think I once heard, if I'm not mistaking, that its owners turned down lucrative takeover deals one time. Their value keeps climbing up d ladder n anyone willing to buy them now should expect some high pricing....

  • I may be in the minority (and may find myself pretty unpopular) but I'd love for Twitter to integrate an in-house ad network similar to (the positive aspects of) Facebook and MySpace's in-house platforms. This way, smaller ad publishers like myself would be able to get in the game as well as the bigger corporations.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to Tweet my ads to targeted users. Like a "Pay-per-Tweet" deal. However, I don't see that being a feasible solution as it would obviously be gamed to the Nth degree and would eventually bug users to the point that they left it alone.

But people said that about Facebook ads too and those didn't impact the popularity of Facebook so who knows?

    It'll be interesting to watch.

You are probably less in the minority than you would think.

Most of the people in my community seem to support the idea of Twitter turning profit with in-house advertising..

I think they would really benefit from implementing something like it, and I don't think it will detract from the overall user experience.

The pay per ad tweet kind of thing might not work, but an in-house ad network sounds killer!

I think Twitter should have a rotating Ad Box at the top of the page allowing advertisers to tweet their Ad in the rotating box, and pay for the length of time that ad gets tweeted and to how many users it reaches.

There's a lot of advertisers that would pay big money for that.

I would almost feel bad for them if they didn't find a way to make at least a little money, similar to how I felt bad about YouTube for a while. I'm glad that these companies first think about the service they can provide people before they think about how they make money off of all their traffic. It's better for us!

I'd personally suggest Twitter launches its own desktop app like Seesmic or TweetDeck, serving ads in the app, rather than via Tweets.

I agree with Jay, Twitter could do very well with an in-house advertising method.

I'm sure they will start putting up some type of advertising within the next year.

They are now a top social marketing competitor with Facebook and Myspace (although I doubt they ever surpass those two sites barring a major meltdown on Facebook or Myspace).

I am really not looking forward to Twitter posting ads. It would be fine if they did it like Facebook does and makes it off to the side so it's not really in the way and one generic layout would make it more tolerable.

It was inevitable. I see targeted ads on the side depending on who you follow. If you follow internet marketers you get CB ads. People already target keywords to follow other people in their niche so I don't think it would be much of a stretch for twitter to target ads.

In house ads or any type of ads wouldn't make enough to pay the power bill.

I say this because most people dont even use the site. They use aps.

Twitter could pay develops a % of tweet ads delivered via aps but then the developers would just have an upgraded version that doesn't display tweet ads.

    To make money, they should:

    1. Charge develops/site owners API access if their ap uses over X calls.
    2. Have user features people would pay for. More API calls, image hosting (buy or start their own tweetpic)
    3. Run their own games, like Trivia, and have sponsor.
    4. Charge for more friends. The average user doesn't need unlimited. I'd say 100-500 would do.
    5. Partner w/ Bing, Yahoo or Google to be the engine that searches tweets. They can pay or do revenue sharing.

    There are other ways too...
