Yelp is evil (imho). So why does Google weight them so heavily?

I'm nearly fed up! I've been working to get more Yelp reviews onto a friend's Yelp business page. I've been emailing prior customer's of his, he's been passing out cards to customers asking for their review, etc. The reason he's doing this is because a "customer" he's never met before left a negative Yelp review, so he wants to combat it with positive reviews.

In regards to my emails I'm sending, I know some customers are clicking the link to his Yelp page because I'm tracking the clicks however NO positive reviews are making it onto his Yelp page.

I know Yelp blocking reviews is nothing new & frustrates everyone, but I then wonder, if business owners feel it hurts their business in a shady way, why doesn't google place a penalty on Yelp to lower their rankings? Why is Yelp still weighted so heavily on Google? Just one google search for services for fixing bad Yelp reviews should go to show how negatively this site hurts legitimate hard working businesses.

Is there anything I can do to help get these reviews into Yelp? Is there another way?

Sorry if this sounds more like ranting. I'm just fed up at this point!

Thanks

I would guess, not even trying to be funny, that it is because Google is counting their opinion backed up by cash, more heavily than your opinion.

It is really all about ad spend, not reviews. the review sites are the ultimate in user-generated content which was such a big deal a few years ago. Lots of people are drawn there, and want to contribute - causing lots of people to be drawn there and on and on.

Try buying some ads on Yelp, that might make a difference.

That's exactly the solution. I know over the last year or so Yelp has really started pushing their sales team...tell them no, and watch your good ratings start dropping off the radar.

The sad thing is a judge has already said it's legal for them to do it...so it isn't going to change.

A rep management first step, if you haven't done so already, is to login and answer the bad review, then offer something to make the situation right.

Just a quick thing but its easier to get good reviews just after a customers bought. Going back in after an amount of time is too much like hard work to people who are ultimately only interested in themselves.

    Good point, thanks.

He is handing out cards to customers on their way out the door, so hopefully some of those make it onto Yelp, but so far, no luck. Unfortunately, I'm not tracking the cards to see if his customers are even attempting to leave a review in the 1st place (although I may start doing that too). Only tracking email clicks currently.

what type of business is it?

could he incentives people to leave a response, money off or a freebie. A QR code could get response before they leave the shop

    Hi,

I had the same thing happen to a client. Someone who was not a customer and had never met my client left a negative review. I just contacted Yelp and they contacted the reviewer and asked her to prove she was my client's client. She couldn't so the review was removed.

Google should bury all Yelp results deep in the SERPS and when they complain offer them AdWords...
