You can try camstudio if you just want something that is quick and very easy to use. its free under GPL license. make sure you get it from the .org site to avoid any unwanted extras that come some downloaded packages.

    • I use Camtasia Studio. It's extremely easy to use, very user-friendly.

I don't know what's your budget. This software costs $300, so if you only need to record video from webcam it may be an overkill for you.
But if you're planning to record some tutorials, capture the screen with mouse click indication, add transitions etc., then take a look at this software. There is a lot of usefull stuff in it, like audio filtering (noise canceling, gaining), webcam video adjustments etc.

I've been a fan of Serif MoviePlus for some time. You can get a free version from here Free Movie Editing Software - MoviePlus Starter Edition from Serif (not an affiliate link) and upgrade to the paid version later.

If you want free software then:

ActivePresenter is the best screencasting software
CamsStudio is a simpler one if you don't want complex features.
Lightworks is a high quality video editor, but the free option limits you to 720p output resolution.

    If you want paid software:

    Camtasia for screen casting
Adobe premiere pro/sony vegas pro/lightworks paid version

I use Camtasia and Adobe Premier Pro.

Camtasia is much easier to learn when starting out. Premier Pro is good to learn if your really serious about videos.

  • An excellent option is Vegas Video 10 or 11 and it is compatible with another product called soundforge. they are respectively a video editing suite and an audio editing suite. They are made to be used together should work excellent with your software and plantronics makes an excellent high quality headset microphone combo for recording and editing for about $40 from amazon with free shipping. $40 + $25 for the audio suite and $30 for vegas video. Now, admittedly it is not free, however it is very simple to use, extremely user friendly, and you can deliver professional quality products without any odd unexpected limitations. How does this sound "A mult track professional rexording studio at your fingertips for less than $120.00??!! Do what you like and try one of their free trial demos to see if you like it. I do audio production work, prerecorded power point presentations, childrens books, commercials. This is premium professional grade hardware & software without breaking the bank.Check it out and good luck!

Totally agree - this is what I did - picked up a copy of Vegas 11 for under $100 and have been using it a LOT ever since

    Hi,

I use camtasia for anything that is video picture based, and PowerPoint for al the text stuff.

Camtasia is great as you can merge and overlay the PowerPoint text slides with the regular video, meaning you dont need any more software. It is not free, but you get your money worth from it.

I am not sure if it works on Vista, which is seriously old now, so the free products listed may suffice.

You have an old PC so the MovieMaker of windows I guess is the more reliable in these conditions.
I don't know if Camtasia studio is the right choice, if your computer can handle it.
Anyway MovieMaker would be enough. Don't try to go for Adobe Premiere because it won't work in
    your conditions.

Camtasia is great! Easy to use and lots of tuts on their website. Plus they give you a 30 day trial, more than enough time to get your project done.

There's a great program that i used to use called "ArcSoft Video Impresssion". You can edit every aspect of a video, and it even has a 1-click feature to extract solely the audio and instantly turn your video into a podcast. Talk about a 2-for-1. This is the best i've seen so far. And yes.... it has a 1-click upload to Youtube also.

    WARNING: Pricey though lol.

Why are people recommending screen capture software?! OP is asking for video editing software. ie he has an avi or whatever and he wants to edit it, add special effects, transitions, synchronize the audio etc etc.

OP, if it's basic editing, then Movie Maker is fine. Some good paid options are Adobe Première elements and the best of the best is probably Sony Vegas Pro but it's very expensive.

I was wondering the same thing. Then I looked at what that Camtasia does and it actually features a full, seemingly simple, video editor.

That being said, I will continue to screen capture using Nvidia Shadowplay and will continue to edit video using PowerDirector

I use PowerDirector. I am just a novice user that just compiles GoPro videos and adds some basic things and it works great. I think it has more advanced features too but I can't attest for them

Camtasia is the option and I believe it's on 50% discount right now at Amazon.

Camtasia does both screen casting and simple video editing tasks too. Power point does some amazing job with videos and you can save them as mp4 and it becomes a video. With proper animations and voice over you could produce some really amazing videos.

I believe PowerPoint is available for $10/month only.

Movie Maker has been awesome for me. Have you tried it yet?

I really see no need to pay for a video editing software. Movie maker allows me to overlay music, rearrange clips, and create slideshows. Pretty good in my eyes.
