A question regarding keyword/competition research

I don't really know in which section this post belongs so I will just post here. My question is - how do I do keyword/competition research properly?

Meaning - let's say I found a new keyphrase - "Best Health Dog". When you type this in google with brackets you get 229 results - pretty good right?

But when you type in the same phrase without brackets, you get 61 million results - not so good.

Now the question is - normal people never usually search with brackets and the first pages that appear on the keyphrase search without brackets are very high PR and with lots of backlinks. So - who am I actually competing with? If I outrank on the brackets search, does it mean I will also outrank on the no brackets search?

Please share your knowledge on this subject.
