How Can You Prove an Article is Really Yours?

I've seen a lot of discussion about the best place to first post an article, and a number of threads about articles being copied and plagiarized, sometimes very quickly.

If you decide to post an article to your own website before the directories and a plagiarist beats you to a directory or places it on their own website, how can you prove you are the original author?
