When choosing a keyword,

you can't go too big, because of the competition,
I'd recommend going somewhere between 1-3 thousand
for starters.

- Poor on-page optimization by competitors. (good news)

- A few old sites in there. (bad news)

- Plenty of sites with very high levels of backlinks to the domain (BLD) but low backlinks to the page (BLP). (bad, and then good news)

- And most of the sites have Yahoo or DMOZ links. (Bad news)

There are a few things going for you - and a few things against you.

I think you see that there's potential opportunities here - but there are no guarantees in SEO, and nobody can say for certain that this is a winner (or a loser).

If you think there's potential here - give it a shot!

The worst thing that can happen is that you learn something new about SEO.
