Squidoo Locked My Lenses....

Ok another reason to focus on my own website. I made 3 lenses on Squidoo. I am new there but did read as much of the TOS as I could, looked at other lenses found similar affiliate links etc. I read through the non-allowed product list.

Then I build lenses to add value, included pictures and content. It took me quite a bit of time.

And voila today all of them are locked. What a waste of time. I get the impression they don't like the affiliate links I had....but they were sort of buried in the bold green contextual links Squidoo had running throughout the page.

Come to think of it I just turned those Squidoo ads off....hmmmmm

Another good reason to focus on my own websites.

OK, Building lenses acording to TOS and building lenses by looking at other lenses are completly different thing. Anyway you seem as taking this positively. That is the good thing.

I have the exact same problem. They have locked some of my lenses that were ranking really well. I had put a lot of effort into them and suddenly they are locked. I have emailed them and I got this:

Peter, We received spam reports that your lens was being posted in forum and blog comments.

I have done no link building to them other than ezinearticle submissions

What does that tell you? If you have competitors use blog comments and forum sigs to get their lenses banned.

    Meh, rant over, #@$@ em.

Anybody could have reposted your articles anywhere.
So, you might not have done the postings, but that doesn't mean that they weren't posted.

Fair enough, but then wouldnt it be easy for me to get my competitors lenses banned? Fire a few spam comments to popular blogs and forums and then wait for them to complain to Squidoo?

    Hi,

I doubt most people will remember but I had a conversation with a few warriors here about two years ago, when everyone was going Squidoo crazy.

For those people - I told you so.

I wish I had been around for that conversation.

What really pisses me off are the double standards. There is another lens on in the same niche, on the same product, but that has not been locked.

      Oh well lesson learned...

I told you to use your own website in another thread - then you can post links to it from other sites instead of posting you affiliate links so you don't get banned at third party sites.

You can also get better SEO with your own website.

The more pages you have on your own website - the more chances you have of being found in natural search results. On every page on your website have a link to every page on your website. That would be your navigation links for your customers.

    Example:

My site in my signature - Collectible Dolls Shop - has 7,000 pages on the site. I have 7,000 chances of one of the pages showing up on Google every time a product search is performed on G. If I only had a one page sales letter on the site - I have 1 chance of coming up on G for each search.

Which had you rather have - 1 chance or 7,000 chances.

I've been doing IM for 11 years now - and I've tried it all - and my websites with products feeds and thousands of pages produce a lot more sales than the one page sales letters do.

Well Burger Boy I think I missed your note on the other thread. Honestly I am very careful to try not to violate TOS and only post affliate links when allowed on sites. When I look at Squidoo it looks very clearly like they are allowed. I read the list of non allowed links and made sure not to include any.
My links are for places like Amazon...

I got a note from them that my lenses were borderline and probably would set off new spam filters. Then they suggested I try again...HELLO! I dont think so LOL!

Regardless it was an experiment and one I am not repeating.

As for you Mr. Itoldyouso, I was not around for that lecture either

Ooohh thanks for the song Burgerboy!

I got one of mine locked because it was reported for using a Flickr image. The funny thing is that when I made the lens 2 years ago (or so), Squidoo had a Flickr module that automatically pulled in images for keywords. That's how I got the image! So I was locked for using the tool they provide for me to use!

Good news is that I removed the whole Flickr module and emailed them and they unlocked it!

I've always looked at Squidoo as just another variation on article marketing to build links to my own sites. So I never spend hours putting a lens together there or on any other Web 2.0 site I don't own. Post good content, but keep copies for yourself so you can just use it elsewhere if your lens gets shut down.

Hmmm I guess I was looking at them as another opportunity for links and affiliate income. So I dressed them up with pics, content etc.

I did try to keep it simple as I already have websites on the topics. But getting used to the site etc. took some time.

I should probably have done even less. But I was trying to add Value

I do keep copies of everything.

I agree with this post. Follow up and hang in there. Nothing more to lose at this point and everything to gain. Plus you'll better understand what they're looking for.

Also keep in mind, just because your competitors and others with similar links are still up and running, doesn't mean they're safe from the chopping block. The axe can fall at any time, and their lenses may not have been checked out yet, but are awaiting review.

Squidoo doesn't make much of any sense right now. They are apparently hipper sensitive. But I believe that when they have the feeling that they have cleaned out all the junk they will get better

I have a lens on "French Quiche" no hype there. Yesterday when I updated it and wanted to re-publish I got a warning! Guess what I had a few links there for a diet cookies and apparently they didn't like that.

The worse part is when I REMOVED ALL the links and tried to republish again!
SAME ugly message saying that something was wrong with my lens. Make no sense. So I sent a message to SquidU with a link of my lens. If that lens is not ok for Squidoo I don't know what is. Let's hope they will get it all back together soon:rolleyes: Especially when I am about to publish an A to Z step by step tutorial for Squidoo newbies.

I will see what they say when they review my lens. However, they did suggest I might like to make try again.

Hello I don't think so. Definitely not worth the effort to me.

    Hi all,
I too had one of my lenses locked by Squidoo, why this has been done is really unclear to me as I have only amazon links on it. However , I was warned not to put to much energy into Squidoo but to post articles on Ezine, Goarticles etc to get traffic to my own website. This seems the best advice so far, the more energy you put into Squidoo the better it is for Squidoo. Now having said that, Squidoo was a good learning place, it is still a great medium but it may be best to keep it as a way to redirect traffic to another site.

For me it's all a part of the game..Sometimes we get away with everything we do..Like some of those lucky people some of you mentioned..Similar lens with you but lens not locked down..

Sometimes we get hit..Yeah it's a pain in the "A??" It annoys us but hey..It should not be a deterrent to try again..What alexa said is probably the best advice..Communicate with them, email them your argument..Tell them why you should not be locked down..then try also to follow their rules..after all it's a free service that allows us to make money..In the end they have the final say but at least you've expressed yours

This should not be a deterrent in making lenses..lenses are helpful specially for newbies..It provides a low cost/No Cost base of operation to start making money.

In everything there's a risk..If nobody takes a risk..nothing will happen..It's just a game..Sometimes you get away, sometimes you don't but if you play CLEAN then VOICE IT OUT..

If you contribute value to squidoo then fight for it..And again, the best thing to do is to COMMUNICATE!

    To Your Success!

Ok, so let's take this to the next level. In today's environment, what is the most effective way to use Squidoo? I have never used them but was thinking about putting up a few lenses, but honestly, primarily for backlinks? I've come to the same agreement as Burger Boy - I'm just going to build my site up with lots of good pages and use all these other sites to push it up in the rankings.

    Sound good?

Squidoo is going to get a lot tougher against affiliate lenses. There are tons of lenses just promoting products and I dont think that is what Squidoo intended their site to be. Squidoo has to clean up once in a while or google will lower them again.

Your post inspired me to go and take a quick look at their initial blog posts -

      SquidBlog 2005 October

I picked two quotes to drop here - of course, I am selectively quoting (which can be used to mislead). But I was specifically looking for anything regarding affiliate links. When they began, they had to offer some kind of incentive for others to give their time and content.

Overall, they emphasize the opportunity to provide really useful content in order to kind of brand yourself as an expert.

I chose these two points to quote -

      Oct 12th 2005

The column on the left features your content. And you're welcome to include as many affiliate modules in this column as you like
      Oct 21 2005

The point of a great lens is to convert someone from a stranger into someone with enough confidence to actually click on something
