Hi all

I hope everyone is ok

I wanted to find out if I can register a domain name with the word "google" in it and not be penalized or taken to court by Google

i.e. I have setup some videos on google analytics and would look for a domain name with google in it

any ideas

i don't want to go ahead and buy it, and then find out i will get done for it

many thanks

Kishor

    Can you? Yes.
Will you? No, most likely not.

I think you'll find you'll "get done for it" with a very stern cease and desist email/letter

      Hi Kim

I have seen domain names registered by individuals with the word "google" in it and I just wanted to make sure

I would not do it .. not worth it in the end IMO.

Do you know if there is a policy in place that states what domain names we can or can't register

Well, I've also seen some people zoom past the speed limit and not be caught.
Yet other people's behavior doesn't always tell you if something isn't allowed.

Anyway, the others have already said that Google does protect and enforce its
trademark rights. They go after whomever they want, whenever they want.

Besides, one of their own pages explicitly states they don't really allow it. But
        YMMV.

So I won't get penalized or get done for copyright infringement or get done for intellectual property rights?

question is, what does your site contain?

This is what is confusing, eg Apple.com is obviously the Macbook people but if I was to register "manyapplerecipes" which obviously would be related to cooking, would the Apple company sue me?

I bought a domain a few years ago with ebay in it and I had a cease and desist within hours. (I let it quietly die)

Amazing how on the ball some of these companies are

Maybe Google aint too bothered (I'd be surprised tho)

What? How about googlereview.com? There are many XXXsucks.com where XXX is all brand names. They are perfectly legal. You mean we can not create a review site for those names?

Google used to be fairly persistent in going after trademark infringing domains but doesn't seem to be as aggressive nowadays. Nonetheless, why put effort and money into a site that a company could take from you at any time. Any domain with Google in it would be an obvious trademark infringement and if Google decided to go after you they could. And they would win. I would try to find a domain without any trademark in it. But, then again, maybe I'm just paranoid. : )

My view is that there will not be an issue providing you are not giving the impression you are associated with Google in some way.

That said, it would be safer not to.

It depends how you use the domain. If you try to profit from it, they can certainly take it down. If you use it as a informational domain and declare your website is in no way affiliated with Google, you won't have a problem.

There used to be a blog called "F*cked Google" that did nothing but criticize Google and they were ok with it.

I have a domain.com with Google in it and not been asked to take it down. Could be because it is parked, sometimes big companies don't bother when a domain is parked probably think you don't intend to do anything with it. I wonder what Google would do if I asked to have Adsense on it? :-)

Oh, they probably just haven't found your site yet. Not all traffic violators get
seen or caught by cops, after all, but those that do tend to pay a price.

And you can bet Google will ask you to transfer it to them, especially if it that
domain's parked. You'd be really lucky if they're willing to pay just the reg fee
to cover it, though don't expect that.

you will get slapped if you do that...people take their brand names seriously...it is a federal registered trademark...be careful, but i'd walk away...
