College? I Learned More Here

So I graduated with my B.A. in Marketing a little over a year ago and as a long time reader of this forum (all throughout college) I have come to the realization that I have learned more by being a member of the Warrior Forum then I did at 4 years of college...Sorry Mom and Dad!

I do not regret my education as I have learned valuable lessons there as well, but the cost of college compared to what you can learn yourself with just a little bit of research is astounding.

Anyways, I just wanted to express what the Warrior Forum has meant to me over the years and wanted to say thank you for all of the wonderful advice I have received from this helpful community...this is a great place to be and I am very grateful to be a part of it!

If your professors knew a lot about internet marketing and where making big money online, then it would have been worth it for you. I would have taken that course if it was offered in College long time ago when I was starting out.

I think the forums here get more into learning about what the latest trends are for internet marketing and most importantly - the mentality of potential customers and what they are looking for and think when reviewing sales copies. Valuable? Of course!

It is possible that information can easily equal money, more so than a lot of courses would be able to prepare you for in college. But I think the value in college for someone who is focused on internet marketing are some of the other courses you will most likely have to take as requirements to get your degree. The core curriculum has a tremendous value that translates well when you consider the value of composition, speech communication, public speaking, business, and financial related classes.

My point is that having both will really help you standout whether you realized the value in some of the classes or not.

    Good points guys,

And college has absolutely helped me in areas like public speaking, group work, time management etc...

Like I said, I have learned many valuable lessons from University that I do not take for granted....And the combination of what I have learned from my experience at college and what I have learned here on the Warrior Forum is pretty priceless.

Group work is one reason I never finished my degree. I don't want my grade dependent on some moron who barely shows up to class.

Beyond that, I've never learned anything in a class that I couldn't have learned faster, easier, and cheaper than by simply reading a book.

While I agree that there are vast amount of information freely available online with self learning especially with community learning on forums like Warrior Forum I think there are still some things that can't be substituted with a college education.

Specifically the network, experience, and life skills you develop in your years of college. It's also a perfect hotbed for entrepreneurship and learning since you can fail while still being a full time student with minimal responsibilities.

Also there are many learning skills and theory that I've found very helpful with internet marketing (took a few intro to marketing courses and notice it really help me understand internet marketing more intently)

A thoroughly agree with the sentiment in this thread. I have to be thoroughly grateful to my cousin for introducing this forum to me. He just said "Warrior forum is simply the best forum on the internet for online marketing"...he was absolutely right!

It really is an excellent place to learn from people who have been in this business for a long time, and network with like-minded individuals...

Probably my favorite part of the Warrior Forum is that everyone is extremely helpful and the "good" advice that is given is absolutely priceless.

Don't sell your College degree short.
If push comes to shove you stand a far better chance of supporting yourself with a College degree than a certificate saying you've spent 2 years reading the WF...

Very well said...It is great having my degree just for the "security" it brings and that I can always fall back on it if I have to!

The difference is that your degree will carry weight for decades.

From the looks of your sig you are involved with a niche that will eventually make you happy you've got that degree to fall back on.

    Hey Evan,
I agree with you to a certain extent.

But for me when I got my BS in Marketing it was accomplishment that went beyond how much I actually learned.
It gave me the confidence, discipline, commitment, and follow through, that I personally do not see myself acquiring ( to the degree) if I had not gone through this experience.

  • You definitely learn things here in a different perspective but learning all the theoretical in college definitely gives you an advantage. Especially if you're very creative in what you do.

I believe the internet is more valuable for learning, for certain people.. I personally didn't go to college, and I left high school at 16, but at age 20 I had become successful online and learned more than in a college marketing course by reading on my own, in about a 3rd of the time..

I think schools put your brain in the wrong mindset like we need to be in an institution to learn their strict curriculum in order to become intelligent., It is so much easier and efficient to learn online, if you know how too.

Unless you go into certain career fields, college doesn't teach you all that much -- other than how to become an employee. I follow a guy on Youtube that got his first degree in psychology. Then, he was like "this sucks" and went back to get a degree in mechanical engineering. He did that for a few years and came to the realization that he didn't like doing that, either. Now, he makes Youtube videos for companies -- in addition to running his own channel.

People tell him he's nuts all the time, but he said that once he got his first check from Google via adsense, he knew that being an entrepreneur was the way to go. I tend to agree. You can also tell by his personality that, regardless of what he does in life, he's knows how to get money. It's all about mind set (and working your butt off).

There is no substitute to learning by just getting out there and doing it. I learnt that when I took a year out to work in industry in the middle of my degree. I learnt more in that year than I learnt in the entirety of the rest of my degree.

Thanks for all of the excellent replies everyone...Obviously many people can relate

Another area that really bugs me about college is the astronomical money it costs to complete your education.

Students are coming out with $10,000, $30,000, $50,000 and $100,000 + in student loan debt before they even have a job.

Luckily, I went to a state school and only have a small amount to pay back, but the students who have $30,000 plus, start out in a HUGE hole!

Exactly. There really is nothing wrong with college, especially because of how great it can help you in all areas like you said earlier like public speaking, time management, and group work.

Unfortunately, the cost can be so high that others are stuck in debt their entire life. If only college wasn't that expensive.

I believe that college has its place, but it am glad you're finding this forum helpful.

I hope you still got the most out of your college education.

I can also relate, and so can many of my online friends.
In college, they can only teach you the basics, and even those basics are, most of the time, really old and don't always apply anymore...
But it's good that you're not sorry for going to college. At least, the college experience can be fruitful, in the sense that it teaches you how to learn, if you know what I mean, and you can make some great connections by meeting new people

That's another good point, I have made some really good connections and friends by going to college...

I guess it's more about the way the classes/curriculum is structured...Many of us are entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs who think and act differently than what is taught in our generic text books and lectures...

The real world is the best teacher! I too have had a similar experience with college. I have a business degree and then went into the working world. I purchased a convenience store, then opened a second store, and in total had 30 employees. I learned more in the first year in the real world then I did in all 4 years of college. With that said, College does have some benefits. It teaches you discipline, gives you networking opportunities, and the degree could help you get a job. Overall though, I think college is not worth the money unless you have a very specific focus that is required for your job. From a marketing standpoint, I too took a lot of marketing classes in college. The problem I find is the curriculum is always outdated because technology and marketing is moving very quickly.

Well, first off congratulations for pursuing your degree...And during my time at college I would work a couple of days a week on my Internet Marketing (mainly learning everything I could at first)...It started with buying marketing products/training, reading up on this forum...Implementing different marketing strategies...Learning, failing, learning, failing

But in this process you start to see what works well for you and what doesn't...I could have quit a long time ago but I was always passionate about making a side income from home

Stay with it and don't give up...learn what you can and stick to something until you see results

First of all congratulations on your bachelors degree. It's almost the equivalent to having served in the military. I would definitely get a marketing job someone to see what the marketing department does. You could implement some of those ideas into your online marketing plan.

Even better... if you're a great marketer, you *could* possibly be promoted to a higher position, which means more guap for you. I wouldn't mind working a 9-5 if a job was paying me $70,000/year - for something that i enjoy (marketing). I'd probably end up being a fat slob though.

Thanks Randall, I never really looked at it that way...As of right now I am not making anywhere near 70k working where I work but have learned a lot through the marketing position I am currently in...And plus it gives me extra money to invest in my own Internet Marketing

So it really is a win-win situation and I do not regret it at all....Plus I came out with under 10k in student loans, which isn't too shabby in this day and age

Academic education limits you to become knowledgeable about what is right and what is wrong if you study it properly.

Professional education makes you knowledgeable about what is good for you and what is not with respect to your skills and resources.

Real education is that which helps to feed yourself and your family.

I'm currently in college and have one year left to go till my Bachelor's. I do want and plan to get my degree, but my IM business is my first priority now. I realized back in December that I didn't want to work a 9 to 5 job the rest of my life.

That said, I don't regret college one bit. I've met a lot of lifelong friends and acquaintances, figured myself out as to what I truly wanted to do (which is becoming an entrepreneur), and have networked and also have connections. In fact, one of my connections helped me potentially get a job for next year once I graduate.

Wow, I didn't realize how many people there were here that were still in College.

I didn't attend college though. The undergraduate Business Management course at UK Universities are very useless (I know because I sat through 1 year worth of lectures since I worked there).

I only joined the Warrior Forum this year but have been a long time lurker. There is definitely tons of information on here as well as some great members. We'll have to see what the future holds. Good to know you've learned valuable things at Uni though.
