Default "TV" Domains -Worth the Cost?

Why are domains that end in .tv so expensive? I just received a promotion from a domain seller, Dynadot that says this:

"$21.99 TV Domains
We are currently selling .TV domains for just $21.99 (a $13 discount!) on the first year of registration! .tv is a top-level domain, just like .com or .net. But what it says about you is entirely different. Like .org or .edu, .tv is a statement about who you are. When users see a .tv address, they know they're accessing a destination that's alive, active and compelling."

$21.99 is the *sale* price?? The above sounds like hype. I doubt if most people, apart from IMers, give a second thought to what type of domain they are looking at. Many, myself included, are barely familiar with .tv domains. So my question is whether there is a good reason to buy these domains, and are they really worth the cost?

Because that's how much the owners of the TV extension want to charge.

Are you doing anything primarily with video?
Do you own a tv station?

What do you think of when you see "TV?"

I bought a bunch of them when they were first offered and Godaddy had a $9.99 sale on them. Unless you plan to develop them into a great video/multimedia site, they are not worth the money. I let all of mine drop and would not purchase one again. It's rare to see them ranking high in Google.

I would only invest in them if I had a development plan and had a great name. Something like Watch.tv or some important keyword.tv

I think there is a lot of hype in .tv and do not buy into it. They are over priced in my opinion and think that a lot of folks will lose out in the long run.

Ok, I guess it makes sense for a video site. Overall it sounds like a gimmick that probably won't ever take off. I suppose buying domains is always a kind of speculation. But I still prefer to find some .com's and .net's that are still available.

The .TV ccTLD was never intended for the "television" market, although many marketers use it for that purpose -- It is owned by the country of Tuvalu. Individual countries can charge whatever they wish for access to their ccTLD.

I had one and found it to be overkill. People still think ".com" automatically and the .tv wasn't worth the extra expense.

I thought they are stopping .TV registrations? Apparently the island is sinking into the ocean and will be no more very soon.

Wow, that's something I never had an inkling about. I have to admit I never even heard of Tuvalu. I'm sure most people associate it with TV or video.
