Are ALL Scammers Delusional?

Just a quick post about the sum of the Web "scammers" you will come across constantly online in forums and pretty much everywhere in the Make Money Online Niche!

I just got a Skype request from an Indian guy asking me to advertise on his SEO related website (I wont post url)!

He said and I quote his words "are you interested to do advertising your website"

I get a lot of these requests throughout the year because I advertise my SEO Services on forums. Now this is what got me very annoyed and a lesson in HOW NOT to do business online!

This is how it went down -

him - are you interested to do advertising your website
me - do you have traffic?
him - 15,000 traffic per day
me - wow really ok let me do some checks online
(I went off an used a few tools to try a verify this amazing statement - ahrefs and site: in google can give me good signs of a site getting 15k per day)

As I suspected its BULL!

So carry on conversation...

me - hmmm you would have to prove it - ahrefs show little action
him - ok
me - can you prove it or not?
him - yes sure i will show google analystics report
me - what are you looking to charge?
him - ....
me - $5
him - very less price
me - lets say you get 100 visits a day which I think you really do get you need SEO on your website and I can do your backlinks for an advert for Free?
him - if i prove my site 15k visitors
me - if you get that a day then why dont you use buysellads.com just be honest I am sick of scammers doing my head in for years - I am a good guy who does amazing SEO
him - ok
me - do you understand? if you want to do business prove it
him - ok
me - Then people will pay you
him - ok

The END!

Moral of this story:

I wasted about 10 min of my life with a 90% range scammer - or he is totally clueless/stupid - not 100% sure but what I do know is never EVER beleive anyone unless you do thoughrough due diligence - I wouldn't even believe a screen-shot of traffic!

Even if he gives me full access to his anayltics I would still be wary and check referrers as BOT traffic is easy (even using adfly.com)

Scamming is easy for these guys be careful out there!

Peace

Adie.

At least you only have to deal with them online on Skype, lol.

I've been approached by many of these offline over the years, and it's a nightmare to get them to understand where they are wrong (if they are patient enough to hear one out, that is).

Scammers are an evergreen niche :-(
To avoid scammer don't believe in too easy solutions, too cheap, too fast...
To make money, to get traffic, to make sales, to get leads required work, time and little or big Investments. Overnight you can only be scammed

"the "Nigerian Prince" scam is deliberately crafted with an outlandish premise and using poor english, because by sending an email that repels all but the most gullible the scammer gets the most promising marks to self-select, reducing "false positive" responses and increasing profitability"

I get these emails in my email inbox here in the forum that people want to sell me traffic and stuff like that and over the years I just learned to ignore them and DELETE their message.

Too bad you wasted your time but there is that "gut feeling" that is supposed to screen scammers like these, I bet you could sense that even before you checked for stats! So why bother and set your nerves on fire?

  • You can smell these scammers a mile away.

I don't even answer their emails.

  • I think your mistake is talking on skype just have them email you proof in email then let them send some free traffic to prove it they can't do that then move on.

I think this stems from a fundamental issue with the make money online / from home mentality.

Our community is largely based off of the "success" model.
We all figure *if* someone became successful doing X, Y, and Z, that if we do X, Y, and Z that we'll get the same or similar results.

Even as I write this post, the AD I'm seeing above this text box reads "FINALLY! something that actually WORKS!!!"

This entire mentality is based off of the hope that whatever works for someone else will work perfectly like their plan is based on the scientific method.

The problem with this mentality is that there are way too many variables involved for this type of method to work, which is why our community is struggling so much. Sure a few people will get some good results by following someone who is successful but the chances are still pretty slim.

I think the main problem with this approach is that it doesn't focus enough on the individuals strengths and skills.

A good teacher / coach in my opinion would focus on their clients skills and abilities not focus on the "system(s)" they created.

    in your example:
I would say that this person is following someones system and has no idea what they're really doing.

I admire his ability to actually reach out to people and actually offer something. The unfortunate thing to me is that he's offering something he really doesn't know anything about and because of this he'll struggle. A lot of people don't even get this far, (actually reaching out to potential clients and offering them something)

So he isn't just wasting YOUR time with his offer but he's really wasting HIS time and efforts. He might get a few uneducated people like him to bite on his offer but they'll soon realize the results he claimed cannot and will not be obtained.

My approach with someone like this would be to find a realistic fit for him based on his abilities and skills. So when he offers something, he's offering something he's actually educated on, able to produce results and feels good about.

I think the majority of scammers are actually just uneducated on the niche they chose and instead of recognizing it they keep trying with the resources they have; of course this is a generalization so there are going to be exceptions but it's my guess that true scammers are actually "good" at what they do and you wouldn't necessarily recognize you're even being scammed.

For the most part I think that IM is paved with good intentions the problem is .. good intentions don't actually educate or help anyone utilize their talents. Another unfortunate mistake is that we all assume that we know what we're good at.

So I guess ... the answer to your question is: YES... they are delusional.. but I think that's because IM itself is somewhat delusional; the idea that you can neglect any of your actual talents and attempt to learn some kind of get rich quick system that someone else was successful with is the wrong approach to making money from home.
People should start with their talents and skills and use the appropriate get rich quick systems to market their skills and abilities. All the while you are developing, sharpening, and honing your skills and abilities instead of trying to acquire the next shiny thing.

Once you know what you're good at, you'll know exactly which shiny system will actually produce results for you,... in my opinion.

I agree, and it is annoying...

but I do think that's because that is what they were taught to do; I mean.. it's unfortunate because their conversions must be horrible imagine if all that effort went into something actually productive. I blame it on misguided education.

I know this is probably illegal, but I always do one of two things whenever I see a well-written scam like that.

    1) I trace their IP address, find out which country they're from, and then threaten to contact their local police if they don't give me $137 dollars. Nobody has ever paid me but damn, it makes me smile thinking about how they must freak out when they see my email. Then I forward the email to the FBI.

    2) I tell them that they're horrible writers and completely missing their potential in conversion rates. Then I offer to write them the perfect squeeze letter for $500...and I've actually had three respond to me willing to pay it. Then I forward the email to the FBI.
