How to approach successful business people with a multimillion dollar idea?

Hi warriors,

Just asking this little question as I believe I have a business idea, that could be worth millions/billions worldwide, however I need to approach folk with extreme experience in creating huge products, services and brands who would find this idea 'easier' then most to start.

I have people in mind, however i'm a little scared when I reveal my idea to them they are going to 'fob me off' - the little man - and then run with my idea in the future.

So, how would I approach them, without the fear of them running with it? Is it a case of I just have to trust them and hope for the best?

The first question, which you haven't mentioned, is...

What do you want from these people?

in most cases, you are going to have to get the idea started yourself in some form or fashion.

you can have people sign non-disclosure / non-compete contracts, but you are probably going to have a tough time getting much traction for just an idea.

I would say your first step is to protect you intellectual property (the idea) with patents and such.

      1. Can take years to be approved.

      2. Expensive.

      3. They often get circumvented.

      4. Does not make sense in context of a NDA. You have to publicly spell out a patent, the more detail the better to have something enforceable. If you are trying to keep an idea under wraps about the last thing I would suggest is filing a public patent, unless one has a significant barrier to entry.

  • Its a good idea to do your research on who you are pitching to and see whether they have been in any legal disputes about stealing someone else's product/service.

If they have then stay clear of them but if not then approach them about your product/service and I know this sounds silly but if your having problems with confidence then ask some actors and performers how they deal with performing in front of people and read books on pitching like.as mentioned by helisell 'Pitch anything" by Oren Klaff

Also don't forget that a lot of these businesses were where you are now and they approached either other businesses or banks (which is another option you can consider) and have asked for help in financing there business all you have to do is have all the business plans and financial information about your business and pitch to them and if they say no then they've missed out on a great opportunity especially if your business become more successful than theirs and if they try and steal you idea then seek legal advice.

Finally if your really worried someone may steal your idea then seek legal help before pitching and before you sign any contracts that way you know your protected as much as you could have been before and after the deal was made.

One of my mentors was once approached by someone who had a "billion dollar idea". He asked the guy if he'd ever had a 10 million a year biz. Answer was no. He asked if he'd ever had a million dollar a year biz. He said no. A hundred k a year? Nope. He hadn't even had a hundred dollar a month business. So why should he be taken seriously with this "billion dollar idea"?

    So, question is, have you?

An idea is nothing without execution. Always keep your ideas to yourself if you can, no need to tell some 'millionaire' because in all honesty they can take your idea and cut you out.

If you have an idea that you believe is/will be profitable then run it yourself. Every single business idea has started out small.

Ingvard Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, started his business in Sweden with just a handful of stores. Now it's one of the largest companies in the world and he's worth billions.

Steve Jobs started Apple with his friend in a garage.

The point is, run your idea by yourself or with someone close to you. It doesn't have to be the fully blossomed idea that you have in your head. Start smaller, simpler and work your way up until you reach the vision in your head.

As time goes by you'll gain knowledge, experience and hopefully money which will help you complete your idea.

    Hope this helps a little,

    Best of luck,

    Karl

From Investor Perspective, Make sure you have below things in professional manner.

    1. An exciting website with all complete information. Not a cookie cutter $500-1000 thing.
    2. A Strong presentation covering aspects about idea, growth and financials.
    3. Clear answer to how will you invest money.
    4. Team members. If you are alone, chances are little less to attract investors. Make a team. He/she may be partner/ employee or whatever.

hmmmm if I had an idea I would keep it to myself and put it into action at my own pace. the next thing I would do is work on moving into an area that I enjoy and that I am totally familiar with that way it wouldn't matter if someone stole it or not, because I could always come up with something New.

Dont even talk about ideas. Say you want to start a business, you know how to run it and just need the money to start. Commit to go a while without pay, to work as much as it takes. If you are lucky they will at least listen. Even better would be to ask for a job and then present your idea.

It's hard though. Once i have approached Noah Kagan and asked him this exact question you are asking. He told something such as "you start and if the idea is good money will find you".

Do you know how many billion dollars ideas i have?....me a million other people.
