n00b question: is the GoDaddy "Get 3 and Save" deal worth it?

Disclaimer: I'm a total N0Ob here (this is my first post), and yes I did search to see if this topic had been covered before, but I didn't see anything straightaway.

Anyway...

When you go to GoDaddy and start the process for registering a new .com domain, they give you the option of additionally purchasing the same-named .net, .org and .info domains. What are opinions on whether or not this is worth doing?

I understand the motivation (preventing "Me too" sites from taking away my potential visitors), but isn't a .com considered to be kind of authoritative? Is it really something to worry about, especially for a site that I anticipate to be more of a place where I can explore my passion and not worried so much about the money (if any at all is to be had)?

  • I think that a .com domain is a good domain name to have but the other extension are not essential but it's good to have them in case someone gets the extension wrong and enters .net or .org as you can redirect them to your .com website.

Also someone may decide to buy the other extensions and run a rival website similar to your however this is unlikely and if they do you could seek legal help and take there website down

However again you don't need to buy the other extension domain names and if you'd rather save your money then just get the .com extension and leave the others until later on

Yup, he's completely right. It's optional but definitely not mandatory unless you see yourself becoming the next Travelocity. If so, buy all the extensions. If not, then it's your call either way.

I mainly posted to say that all domain sites offer bundles and discounts on your first purchase BUT those discounts will also be there year-round through other offers as well. So don't feel pressured into losing out on anything if you just buy the .com now.

I would think it is not worth it for .org and .info and is arguable for .net. However, if you have built up a business with .com, then not having the .net can cause problems. I can give you an example here

    hawk-rc.com and hawk-rc.net

Everybody thinks that they are the same company but they are not. The original owner of both names sold the business to a new owner. The new owner decided not to renew the .net and the previous owner registered it. Not only that, he set up a rival shop selling the same stuff under that domain.

If you are planning to be a brand, or at least big or authoritative, you may aswell snap up all 3 to stop any problems popping up down the road

Well, since you're not planning on opening up an online business or anything like it, then it's probably not worth it. Just take the domain you want (preferably the .com, although I have had .net domains before and they are OK too), stop worrying about people snatching the other extensions and start focusing on developing your website

I wouldn't even worry about it if I don't feel like buying them too or don't have enough to buy them.

And if I do buy them, I would redirect them to my original .com site.

    I hope this helps!

    I wish you the best!!

    Keep up the great work!

    Cheers!
