No ads for a Keyword that I search for. Is this a bad sign??

I found a few keywords that interest me, so I typed them into google to see what was on the SERP. Much to my surprise there were zero ads on the search page so it got me to wondering...

Is this a major red flag that there is not much opportunity for monetization through Adwords?? The keyword seems to warrant (in my mind at least) some sort of potential for it is a keyword that relates to a somewhat popular product.

What's even more confusing is the fact that Google Keyword Planner tool shows the suggested bid on the keyword at $2.28. I'm under the impression that the $2.28 is the CPC amount, which if I'm not wrong, means there are people out there paying for this keyword in ads. If that is the case, shouldn't that mean there is in fact a chance for monetization through Adwords?? Or is this logic completely incoherent...

Any and all comments are appreciated!

  • I've had the same thing happen to me and in retrospect it was always because the word or phrase wasn't commercially viable (though you can monetize almost anything).

"commercially viable" as in viewers were not interested in clicking ads regarding said keyword??

Well it would be like bidding on the word "red" or something like that. There is no way to make money with it so there would be no advertisers.

On the other hand you could have discovered a little gold mine that nobody else has found. Without knowing the word you are using it is impossible to say. (Don't post it, it will be stolen)

If there are no ads this simply means nobody is targeting this keyword. This doesn't mean this won't happen in the future, but it really depends on the particular keyword.

You just have to put yourself in ana dvertiser's position to understand if it will ever be worthwhile bidding on this keyword in order to make a ROI.

It means advertisers aren't paying for the keyword though this shouldn't really bother you because when this happens, Google automatically displays relevant ads to the user on what they search on the internet. I had a site that ranked high on Google but didn't have ads on the Google search page but I still made on average $1 a click because Google puts relevant ads on for individual users.

Let me clear this up really quickly to check if I understand what you are saying haha

So if a keyword has no ads on the SERP, ads will still show up on my niche site that are tailered to the individual users in the traffic I gain on my niche page?? The ads will simply be about something the viewer can relate to rather than the keyword that my niche was made on. Is that the general idea??

Yes pretty much. You will still show ads on your site but the ads will vary per user based on what they search for online.

There are other factors that people also look out for before advertising using Adwords like the number of searches per month, geographical location, if the keyword has buying intent etc.

            Hey Ejsuhh,
From my own experience, this usually does indicate that the KY more or less has been targeted in the past but failed to provide little Conversions.

Of course, this does not necessarily mean that somehow in the future it won't be.

But at that time it is

Usually this means that no one is searching for this term and no one is advertising for it either.

If you are a risk taker, then try to spend $100 to see if you are getting any clicks or sales.
