Wow this makes internet marketing sound like a bad addiction lol.

Ive succeeded at some and failed at others from a monetary standpoint but all were and are learning experiences for me.

Maybe manage your time a bit differently so your failed attempts (as they seem to view it) at your internet marketing vision doesn't overpower your other contributions to your family.

My wife is neutral and more negative than positive about what I do online. It has taken a long time to get results like I am now....

My family has asked about what I am doing, so I tell them. I don't hide it, I tell them when they ask.

I keep marketing expenses to a minimum as much as possible and do my best to pay cash.

I have told my wife I have to keep working at this. She is neutral. She says ok, and my results lately are easing up that tension.

It is not easy when you believe in something and know that it will take time and a certain amount of money to be successful.

You have to just keep working at it the best you can, and be upfront when they ask what you are doing.

You mostly have to keep telling them to believe in you even if they don't believe in what you are doing.

The lifestyle you want to live is worth any struggle you go through. At the end of the day, your family will tell you that they are glad you were strong even when they had doubts.

Haha, if you keep wasting money, sometimes it's good to listen to your family and go find a 9-5 job!

Last year I was making about $2500 on autopilot, but decided to get a day job (8-5) for about 8 months.. and it was a nice experience!

And when I came back to IM, I came back with a great passion and mindset.

Sometimes it's benefitial to kill the IM routine.

Well how long have you been at it?

Think about it from their perspective. You've been "doing IM" for X years and overall have lost money doing it. Even though you've probably learned some valuable lessons, they essentially see it as you playing around on the computer.

Your best bet is to show them what you're up to and teach them a little bit about marketing. Tell them what you're trying to do and how you're working towards it.

I need to add one more thing on this post.

Most people don't understand that you have to fail to succeed. We are conditioned to believe that if you fail once or twice at something, it's time to quit and find something that you will be successful at on your first or second attempt. Failure should not cause you to quit something that quickly.

With internet marketing, pretty much like anything else really, you have to decide how bad you want it.

The majority of people who have been truly successful have failed multiple times and kept digging.

Most people can't accept failure. Most people want somebody else to make the decisions so that they are not responsible for a failure. You grow as a person when you learn to accept failure.

I have seen people, myself included, get past a fear of failure and understand that it is going to happen at times. You simply learn not to worry about it and throw out what doesn't work, and do the things that do work once you find them....and you will find them if you keep looking.

You have to ease up on yourself and keep going until you find that thing that works. It really is different for everybody. That took a long time to sink in with me. Find your fit, even if it's not what you thought it would be.

In some cases, I know of successful people who had family members come on board after they reached a level of success. I also know of a highly successful person that his family still doesn't like what he is doing, even with his huge success.

Fear and skepticism and being critical of something they don't understand are mindset issues that cripple people. We as marketers have to have patience with those people. We need to stay available to help them if and when they are ready to learn the skills necessary to succeed.

Sorry for the long winded post. Personal development and mindset are huge with me at this point in my life. Our mindset dictates everything, success or failure, and how much we have of either one.

When I began in the IM industry I failed on almost every project I began. I just started doing things, while I didn't what I was doing, my failure rate was 9 out of 10 and that 1 time i did succeed. it was not scalable or the profits we're low. This was 1,5 years ago.

In the summer of 2014 I made a plan that was good enough for 10 years of work. The only problem I had, was getting traffic to anything, but at this time my failure rate was only 7 out of 10.

In november 2014 I bought a membership in a internet marketing system just to find that 1 traffic key that would lead me to success, instead I learned something else; Mindset.
I learned that there we're no problems to deal with such as traffic, low budget, lack of knowledge etc. If you have plan, start working that out, step by step. Write every step you have done down and explain to yourself why you made certain decisions. It will make the whole process easier to understand for yourself and it's good for creativity.

Since I'm using this technique/mindset, I'm getting more success and joy out of IM than ever before. I'm not saying i'm making a million online, but I'm getting somewhere.

I don't visit this section of the WF very often but almost every time I do, I see YOU posting a new thread about something new you're trying out.

There's no shame in asking for help or advice but I think in your situation you would be better off to stop skipping around from project to project, product to product, and stick with one thing.

Personally, if I were at it as long as you and just wasted money I would get a job. If you feel like you have to hide it from loved ones, then it may be time to get out for a while.

I remember way back when I got into it nearly 15 years ago.... I didn't really HIDE it I just didn't spend a lot of time explaining it because they didn't understand it.

But now I don't need to explan it because it's more mainstream and the fact that it's legit is evident by the income I make and the lifestyle I live.

It's important to remember that if you're new, you shouldn't talk about it bcsuse people who don't UNDERSTAND it often react negatively. This negativity can influence you. That's one thing that I had to deal with.

Oh yeah, the majority of people relate a laptop/desktop to chatting, playing, watching youtube, fb.. (Wasting of time)

It bothered me a lot when I was younger, and working hard for countless hours and some moron (someone in a coffee shop, or a guest for example) comes and tell me what are you playing!!!!!

My girlfriend used to... well lets just say she used to make fun of me for spending hours in front of my computer trying to learn how to "make money online".

It took me a little less than 2 years to start earning more than what I was earning in my full-time day job, and by 3 years I was making 4-5 times what she and I combined made at our full-time day jobs.

Even then, it took me a long time to get her to not laugh when I'd say I am going to my office (basement) to work.

As you can imagine, now I am the one who's making fun of here for making fun of me, lol.

That said, it is understandable that many people are skeptic about this whole IM thing. After all, most people only hear about other folks who have been scammed online. Normal people don't usually come across bloggers and IMers who make 6 figure incomes online.

this isn't crack cocaine , this is internet marketing lol. Your family and partner should be supportive, or at least educated on the matter before they criticise.

So do you tell your wife you're just off to walk the dog but in reality you drive to the library and sneak in a quick few pages of article marketing and then quickly finish off by building a few backlinks.. On the way home you wash your hands to get the smell of keyboard off your fingers, and fall in a puddle to make your dog "walk" seem more legit.. this what happens in your house hold ? sorry, got a bit carried away there..

Of course if yo're doing something silly like binary options robots or signing up to "earn 34,00K a second" type courses, then they have every reason to be sceptical

There are a lot more people than you think where this is not much different than being addicted to crack. The 'crack' is the system or software.

When the 'high' wears off from that purchase, it's onto purchasing some more to get that feeling back. I know people who purchase at least 10 products a week.

I've even been in mastermind groups that refer to digital products as selling crack.

        OK fair enough..
I have never bought into the whole digital products thing (i have never bought an ebook or guide or WSO in my life) so I wouldn't know what it feels like to want more.. Surely the feeling should come from learning the method and succeeding with it, rather than just reading it and moving onto the next one

Based on some of the other posts I've seen from you...

You're not trying to build a business, you're gambling: Compulsive gambling Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic

Even in this thread you seem to ignore everything else except the person who brought up $2,500, then you asked them questions.

It's nice to hear things like "you need to fail before you succeed", but the reality is, this isn't for everyone and when you end up hiding things from your family and relying on a line of credit or borrowing from people to keep continuing your habit, it's time to quit.

BTW. If you bother to read the series you will find that when I was 46 years of age I did not know this. I was actually told this by the woman who helped me save my life when I was suicidal. She is a wonderful woman. And she made it clear to me all women are pathological liars, even herself.

It even took her quite some time to convince me and I had to talk to many other eastern european women to be convinced of this fact. I think it is a sad fact myself but just because I do not like it does not make it any less true.

You are welcome to go read the series rather than for me to comment on it here.

But the very fact you called me a troll is, in and of itself, a pathological lie.

So I guess you are female because only about 4% of men are pathological liars.

          Are you female?

With IM start with something where you can get your money back quickly or where you are getting such value that the money you pay is worth it.

I avoided all these "get rich quick" schemes because there are so many of them and they usually end in no money for the newbie. A friend of mine brought me in to his iPAS2 franchise. I have known him for years and he is very smart. He is making good money from his internet businesses so I knew he would not be leading me astray.

But he knows me and he knows how many contacts I have so he knew iPAS2 was very likely a good fit for me. He was right. iPAS2 is particularly good for people who have more than 10,000 connections in their social circles. If you already have 10,000+ connections you can't lose money on something like iPAS2.....you could lose money on lots of other things. For example I thought I would get as many sales of Wealthy Affiliates as iPAS2...but that has not proven to be the case. I presume because with WA you actually have to build a web site to promote your blog or whatever it is you want to promote...

So if you are constantly buying into new schemes and getting nothing out of them? You are buying the wrong schemes and going about it the wrong way.

John Ochs did a forum entry on this the other day. He met a guy who bought into 6 "franchises" on the basis that "one of them has to be successful". This is INSANE...much better to look for the ones where people who know what they are doing are ACTUALLY MAKING MONEY and then copy the leaders....that is MUCH more likely to get you a good franchise.

And yes...there are plenty of frauds out there. This is why my first such franchise purchase was one that a long term friend bought to me. I know he is not lying.

BTW...one of the BIG issues I have already seen is how people do not do as they are told in their franchise.

    WTF?

That is the whole idea of a franchise....do as you are told to raise your chances of success. You do not buy a McDonalds and then decide to make your own flavour of burgers, right?

    1) Wife might leave you due to financial problems (and take the kids)
    2) Parents stop cooking you Sunday dinner. In fact, they might even ban the whole family tradition

Real talk... hopefully the person in context that we're talking about ISN'T you. So if this person is a friend of your's, and they really HATE working *thatmuch*... tell them to consider getting a small business loan - to start an offline business... and probably buying out a local Dollar Store in the area. They are just looking out for your best interest at heart. But, it's REALLY down to you. How bad do you want this? Do you want to work for yourself or not? If you say YES, than be proud of the fact you're in IM and working for yourself. GO FOR IT with all your heart!

Personally, I don't think there's any reason to hide what you're doing. But I am concerned about how you asked your question. Anyone that does this for any length of time knows that there is money that is going to be lost doing it. Consider it training. You'd spend a few thousand dollars a year, or even a month going to a traditional four-year college to get an education. Why should working online be any different? You're going to spend money, you're going to lose money, you're going to learn from your mistakes. So, you're not losing money. You're gaining an education, that hopefully will last you for many years to come. And sooner or later, if you don't give up, you're going to win. Understand?

  • Personally at some point everyone needs to transition their thought process from buying things to selling things. At the end of the day you need to sell something to make money.

My ex-girlfriend dumped me because she found out that I was doing IM and thought I was too lazy to work 9-5.

I dont think there is anything wrong with IM . If you are not getting anything from it then probably you are wrong somewhere . Find out why it isn't working out for you.

There will always be people who doubt but that's when you have to keep going! Always be honest with your family though, don't hide anything.

      Devilfish168,

I can sympathize with how you feel, but honestly sometimes I feel like you must "Sell Out" to your dreams/goals in life. I think it's important to share these dreams with your family. Making bold statements about your intentions to your friends and family may be kind of scary, but it lights a fire under your butt, so you get to work!

So in other words, don't hide what you're doing, just share where you're going with it, your reasons for wanting to succeed. It's much easier for people to understand and relate to your dreams than the typical IM tasks of building a list, getting traffic, writing copy, etc.

One other word of advice. Focus on finding a way of generating some income real fast (no matter how small). Such as setting up a gig on fiverr, sending people to popular products with your amazon affiliate link or just making a small affiliate sale somewhere else. The idea is to just to start making some money. Even if it can't pay your bills yet, you can still tell your family that you are making money. Because honestly, isn't that why there is such a big concern anyway?

You are working to build up skills to pay the bills! Like any other profession, it just takes some time and focus! Just make sure you're not wasting your time goofing off on Facebook, Youtube etc. Make all your time count!

      Hope that helps!

I think that, as long as there is a balance in your family budget, then you should be able to continue do to what you are doing. Sure, if your investments in IM are cause for too many arguments or if you end up not being able to pay for rent and food... then maybe it really is time to start looking for alternatives.
