hundreds of articles to the top 10 articles directories will bet you more traffic from the articles. On the other hand 1 article to a hundred directories will get you 100 backlinks to your site which might help you Search Engine Rank. Depends on what you want to accomplish.

You can also accomplish both. Submit your original to a handful of the top sites then rewrite it 50% or more and submit it to all the others.

You're better off concentrating on the article directories that will get you
the most traffic. There are some directories out there that don't even
register a blip on the map and even for the purpose of backlinks, they're
        close to worthless.

Ultimately, you have to test things out for yourself and see what works
        best for you.

Assuming you're not going to outsource and only work with the time you have available, focus on the top 2-3 directories and submit your articles there.....AND also spend part of your time also improving the visibility of your articles (Google SERPs). This will be the best return for your time for the long-term!

    It all depends.

If you're submitting articles for PAGE RANK, submit articles to high PR directories for lots of backlinks.

If you're submitting for traffic, well, submit lots of articles where there's lots of traffic: i.e. EZA, GoArticles, etc.

Check out my course, I talk a little more about article marketing there.

Make sure to get your article links on all the top bookmarking sites also to increase, not only your article traffic but your backlinks.

Really depends on your goal too.

For backlinks purposes, you may wantto submit your article to high PR and reputable places, even some low PR places too, but just as Steve has mentioned above some sites are close to worthless so don't be fooled.

If you were using directories for traffic purposes too, then just the top few will give you the traffic you need... and you can diversify with hub pages, squidoo and similar

What's most important is that you remember you are dealing with people, and the information you put out there is crucial... make sure it's newsworthy, easy to read, solves a problem and can in turn help you build a loyal reader base because your content is worth reading.
