Geographical Location of Hosting and Search Rank

I have managed several sites hosted in the UK and in the US. I have noticed that a site hosted in the UK will usually get higher ranking in Google SERPs on google.co.uk than on google.com for the same keyword, even if the company had offices in both countries, American spelling and basically nothing in the content that could be considered UK specific. This is for a world wide search, not 'Pages from the UK'.

My questions:
1) Has anyone else noticed this?
2) On the flip side, does US hosting provide better google.com rankings for businesses outside the US than if they host in their own country?

Thats a good question, having a .co.uk version of your .com site will always help and just have a 301 redirect from the .co.uk to your .com site should allow google to see relevance to UK market.

I noticed my sites hosted in Portugal get stronger results than sites hosted in US while working the .pt market.

    And it makes sense... doesn't?

Oh forgot to add this was one of the first 3 SEO rules i read some years ago: always keep your sites hosted in same country you target.
