Anyone used a GoPro camera to record an info product?

Hey guys,
I'm getting ready to record some more guitar instructional videos and previously I have hired people to film me but now I want to invest in my own cameras.

Has anyone used the GoPro cameras for creating their products?

The price is very good compared to others I have been looking at.

Anyone with a little knowledge in this area and some advice would be great.

Cheers!

I would not recommend a GoPro for this purpose. GoPro is more designed to capture 'point-of-view' video for actions sports.

GoPro uses a shorter focus lens to create a bit of a fish-eye effect that makes action sports look more exciting but is bad for an instructional or narrative video.

A comparably priced hd video camera should be fine.

I am going to agree with this. It is good for B roll but not for an info product. My advice, budget for camera, lighting and a good microphone. In fact, if you are short on budget, make sure sound and lighting are top notch. For example, don't spend 3k on a Canon 7D and nothing on lighting and microphone. Instead spend 1000 on a 70D, 200 for lighting and a 1000 audio is a better mix of money.

Don't underestimate your iPhone, iPod touch, or android device for this as well. You don't get as much depth of field but with good lighting and sound the video can be top notch.

For the budget you are talking about, I would use my smartphone, spend 120 on a lighting kit from amazon and 200 on a Zoom H4N which can be used as a shotgun, for PC recording and you can plugin external lapel mics as well as it having XLR inputs.

As other have said, a GoPro is very basic. Unless you're going to make a LOT of videos, it's often better value for money to hire a camera, lighting and other equipment on an as-and-when needed basis. That way, you'll always have access to the most up to date kit. That's how most professional video production companies do it.

I just purchased a GoPro Hero 3+ for doing something similar. I haven't done any recordings yet. Purchase one from WalMart and try it out since they have a 15 return policy on cameras.

Have a look a GoPro's YouTube channel and browse YouTube and watch user videos
