Hi,

I have 0 knowledge about how I should make a website, but know about some templates for landing pages etc that are not expensive.
Website is about men and women ties and bows. Website shouldn't be anything special, few drop-down menus, some pictures and a little text. He just started with sales. Geo - Serbia.
Is wordpress the way to do it?

You can do it, but your not going to do it well unless you follow a course of some sort. Also if you expect this website to be of any quality, you will probably only end out making about 5 dollars or less an hour.

You can but you're going to face lots of issues as you don't know a thing about making a website. I know what you're thinking, it's good money and WordPress is easy. I do agree with you but it's a client and they're going to have requirements. At first all of them say I don't want anything fancy but in the end, they all end up asking for way more than they're will to pay.

You can still make some profit if you know someone who can do it for less than what your friend is willing to pay. I know it's really hard to find but I know a couple of people who will do it if it sounds okay for them. You can PM me if you want to.

If you're really interested in making websites, start learning how to make websites with WordPress; it's not hard but it's not that easy too.

Youtube has plenty of tuts on how to make a website using WordPress. Good Luck.

If it's really a friend, then you will turn down the opportunity and tell him to find a local professional. In Serbia, there should be design firms that would build a great website for that price....so do your friend a favor and say no.

If you have absolutely no idea on what to do, I think will be better to hire a freelancer.
If the requirements of his site are not very high, I think you can get a cheap site and you can keep half of the money.

And yes, WordPress would work for that kind of website. Find a nice theme and should be like out of the box.

You could think of this as a learning process. I was once there where a family member asked me to design him a website because I was apparently ''good at computers'' despite him only seeing me surfing the web. Regardless, I tried it out for him after reading a few tutorials online and it didn't turn out all that bad. If you feel comfortable, give it a go, if not, tell him thanks but you think he would be better off hiring a professional who knows what they are doing as you are afraid you might mess things up.

    I would say - not.

Knowing how to make a website is one thing; knowing how to make a profitable website - or one geared toward that end - is another thing entirely. I would ask your friend to learn how it's done. He can do it for $150, but only if he does it himself.

Tell your friend you can do it in a week - on the condition that if he does like it, he's gonna pay you $150. Tell him that you're willing to try it out since you have a bit of knowledge anyway so might as well help out a friend in need.

Don't forget to tell him to be brutally honest with the feedback and tell you straight up what he doesn't like and what he does like.Make it a collaborative process every step of the way.

If he is your friend he'd take you up on your offer just to see how it goes. And if you're a true friend, you'd take the criticisms like a man and learn from it.

There are two upsides to this:
    1. In case he didn't like it, you get to keep the experience of working with wordpress.
    2. If he does like it, you get the $150.

Worst case scenario, he'd buy you lunch or something for putting in the effort.

What gave your friend the impression that you could build a website in the first place?

Let me ask what everyone is thinking. Did you run an ad looking for clients and now that you have found one you decided to learn how to create what you are selling

I think you have 2 options to consider: either hire a freelancer, which means 'giving up' on the whole sum of money (because you'd have to pay the freelancer to do this for you!) or start learning the basics, real quick! It's really not that difficult, learning about how to make a website, but it does take a lot of time.

  • I really don't think it is worth the money even if you are in India. You should be charging a lot more. Even if you are trying to build up your portfolio. Good quality websites should go for nothing less than $500 and that is how much web designers take per site.

For $&@$? Sakes, please read the OP before making such a dim statement..... The OP has ZERO knowledge on building sites.....

Since your client is your friend, tell him it's going to cost three times what he is going to pay you if he wants a professional functioning web site. That's what he will eventually spend to hire a free lance designer to come in and fix your first attempt so that it works as it should.

Well if it is a true store, with his own products, inventory, payment pages, processing - NO - that is very complicated and worth more than $150 even in Serbia, India etc

I guess if it is just an affiliate store front or feed, you may be able to handle it. Better ask yourself how much you want to remain friends with this guy?

I'd echo a couple of the others. If for a friend, possibly not a great idea. Given your lack of experience about building sites, you might find it difficult to deliver and end up risking the friendship.
