They aren't stupid names but rather brandable names.

Have money to invest into branding, promotion and marketing helps, however knowledge is key here.

Many of these companies started with little to no money, however some were able to secure big investments once they proved their model works. Fiverr for instance was able to get a total funding of over $20Million, if i am not mistaken.

EDM used to help with ranking a few years ago but it no longer seems to be the case. So you should chose a domain that you like because you'd probably spend the same amount of effort to rank Derblr. com or MySuperKeyword .com

Personally I'd suggest going with a brandable domain name but that's just my opinion.

    This is a great question.

    Branded Domains

The domains you mention are what many of us call branded domains. When initially purchased they have no type-in or search traffic. No one, for instance, was searching Google for "Twitter" before it came on the scene and, subsequently, took off. The question is, why purchase such a domain? A great many reasons. The biggest one being to differentiate your brand in the market, making it unique, memorable, and promote the general ethos of the message you intend to put out to the target audience. There is, however, another reason. A great many sites in recent times are less reliant on Google and other search engines and more reliant on social sites to send traffic: locations like Youtube and Facebook and G+. It helps in these settings to often use a branded domain, especially if you're watermarketing videos.

    Keyword Domains

Well, I've inadvertently talked about this already. These are purchased, primarily, due to the frequency of interest in the keyword itself: type-ins, searches, CPC. If, for instance, you aim to promote pink fluffy bunny rabbits, then owning PinkFluffyBunnyRabbits.com, that receives (I'm obviously making this up) 8,000,000 searches a month, would be a good buy. Some SEOs will tell you that exact match domains are no longer relevant in ranking, but they're wrong. They're less relevant. But an EMD has more value than mere ranking. An EMD helps to CONVERT. If you think about it, you'll understand. You go out looking for those bunny rabbits. You want to buy one. You see two organic or two ad links: PinkFluffyBunnyRabbits.com and WickedCoolRabbits.com. If you're in the market for a pink fluffy bunny rabbit, which one do you click? Exactly. And a million other people (and more) will do just the same.

I agree on what Alex says. Think of branding when you go to purchase domains. If it is memorable - you may be on the right track...You only have to think of amazon.com to think. Quality website right?

This one. Your goal is to get in, and get out. Go into a niche, conquer it, put it on autopilot, run it from your smartphone, then start another venture. "Big" companies often have great marketing personnel. But if they're truly "direct marketers", but their boss overall company wants them to do "brand advertising", then it is what it is. And the costs are high with brand advertising.

But you could the niche/keyword URL approach and make money right away. Get the money first and take care of bills/home/family... then if you want.... work on become a world-famous internet marketing expert. (or business guru for that matter)
