How to start on eBay?

I have something that I want to start selling on eBay. What are the requirements to succeed? I know it is advised to buy some small items first to build up some reputation. How much of that is needed? Anything else?

Best way to start on eBay is just that.. start! Either find something you don't use around the house or buy something that's massively discounted at a shop and pop it up online. Have a look at this story from the UK, she turned over £100,000 in her first year by just looking for things cheap and selling it on.

But with eBay it's pretty simple as long as you actually get started!

BUT, be aware of eBay's 180 day - yup, 6 month - return policy. I stopped selling on eBay unless I have no other choice because it has become way too easy for buyers to scam you, especially on used items - i.e buyer can receive your item, perhaps remove needed parts and/or break it, and then file a Significantly Not As Described (SNAD) claim, and get a refund.

These days, eBay is probably safe for selling high volume, low priced new items (i.e. China style) because return rates are generally acceptable for such things. But I would never sell any high-dollar items there unless you can afford to lose.

People do that?? I've never been caught out by anyone doing that but, admittedly, I usually buy new items that are on sale so they probably couldn't do that.

Where do you generally sell your higher-ticket items now?

Just start selling. Fast shipping and good customer service goes a long way. I've bought and sold a ton of stuff on eBay over the last 14 years and have only had a couple bad experiences. In the grand sceme of things, no more than any other platform. There are a lot of buyers on eBay and they know it. Between ebay and PayPal, the'll take 15-20 percent of your profit so factor that into your pricing structure.
