Ways to research what products to promote on Amazon.com?

I'm currently averaging $300 per month from Amazon affiliate commissions. I know Amazon started out with books so what I'm focusing on are also books. Some say books aren't what makes the most, but refuse to tell me how they choose products to promote on Amazon.com.

My procedures are simple. As I promote books, I will just search for relevant book genres / titles / etc. keywords on Google Keyword Planner, order them by monthly volume and check the saturation on Google Search.

What is your way of choosing Amazon products? Can you share a tip or two? How do you select the most profitable products on Amazon? A hint?

    You can make plenty of money with books -- you just have to sell a lot of them. GoodReads, for instance, had an affiliate-based business model in which they only sold books. I'm using the past tense because they were so successful that they eventually were bought out by Amazon.com for an estimated $150 million. The point is that the type of product you promote matters much less than your ability to deliver value to your customers, earn their trust and generate repeat sales.

    So don't believe the people who say that it's easier to sell one $1,000 product than 100 products costing $10. That may be true for some business models, but it's also true most people spend a lot more money on Coca-Cola than they do on Dom Pérignon. But overall what works for you is going to depend on your own business model and the needs of your own customers. It doesn't matter if GoodReads was able to sell their site for a crazy amount of money if your customers are illiterate bumpkins.

    So to (finally) answer your question: the way we select the products we promote is by really understanding our customers. We know why they visit our site; we know what they like; and we know how to give it to them.

    If I am promoting to general traffic, I always choose the best sellers.

    If I market to a specific niche, I choose the most quality and expensive products to promote, so I can get more % comissions.

    That's an impressive amount for books and especially when Amazon claim to
    now sell four Kindle's for every psychical book

    I've always used the KISS (keep it simple stupid) approach and has worked quite
    well for a few years.

    1. Pick an area that you have a passion for
    2. Choose high valued items $300+
    3. Products are new or relatively new
    4. Write a 400+ word article for each item
    5. 2/3 products images and one affiliate link
    6. Bookmark the new post
    7. Your Done

    A lot of folk seem to think they need a magic potion with loads of bells and
    whistles, but you DON'T. Using a bit of common sense and a willingness to
    review the correct products should give you a decent return on your time.

    The one thing I'd like to add is that, you should always have an Amazon statement
    (as per their TOS) in each post or you could face problems further down the line.

      What's the Amazon statement? Do I have to list it on every page that has my Amazon affiliate link?

      I guess you don't do keywords analysis?

      How do you write a review if you don't buy the product yourself?

    I would also pay attention to the top 3 products selling in the category you are looking into. Look at their BSR on Amazon anything under 5000 you know has a lot of sales. You can get away with under 10 000 BSR as well and do decent sales

    For me, I'll just choose a category that I'm interested in, say Sports and then choose a sub category like Fitness Equipment. Then check out those best sellers, new releases and Movers and Shakers to gauge what are the popular type of item and write on those. As for keyword research, don't have to get too complicated on that. I'll use the keyword tool to get ideas for slants that I can create content on.

    Writing reviews doesn't always mean you have to buy the product. You can describe, elaborate on the specs given. Do some research on what some of those unfamiliar phrases mean (like DPM for printers?) and explain it like to a friend. You can keep your posts casual with your own thoughts about it. Otherwise just do those Top 10 posts, or Top 10 under $20 type of posts.

    Best sellers list all the way. People love seeing items that have a ton of great reviews.

    P.S. - The "sell high ticket items or sell items over XXX amount" is a myth. Your affiliate cookie is on someone's computer as soon as they click your link and you're getting commission on everything they buy for the next 24 hours.

    It doesn't matter what you're promoting, you just need them to click. (Respect da cookie!)

    I made $50 in commission last month off one person alone who went on a (I'm assuming) drunken/high spending spree that had nothing to do with products I was promoting.

    I could tell it was the same person because my "Sold Items" report for that day was filled with mouth grills, weed t-shirts, weed socks, leggings that read "Dope" on the butt and all kinds of other crap I'd imagine a sober person wouldn't be buying.

    Guess they wanted to be Jay-Z for the day.
