well i would suggest generic stuff which you can get on a PC too! I use iweb on Mac which is brilliant for making websites! its so much easier than PC's.

Also, get filezilla, which is available for mac too! thats the FTP client thats free, and is very good! cant think of anything else right now :S

    neil!

      Microsoft office for mac

and/or iwork which has pages(word processing and will make pdf), numbers (spreadsheet), and keynote (slideshow presentations)

Screenflow if you'd like to do some video tutorial/screen capture

You can get kooky and go for stuff like photoshop, but mac has built in iphoto and preview will let you edit the size of pictures as well.

Press apple, shift and number 4 to take a screenshot.

Don't really know what you will need until you know what task you need to do.

You should check out Open Office. It's the equivalent of MS Office but it's FREE and they have a MAC version. It's also compatible with MS Office. Hope this helps.

There is another version of OpenOffice that is tuned to the Mac OS called NeoOffice. NeoOffice Home
"NeoOffice is a full-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs) for Mac OS X. Based on the OpenOffice.org office suite, NeoOffice has integrated dozens of native Mac features and can import, edit, and exchange files with other popular office programs such as Microsoft Office."

Couldn't get along without Text Wrangler. It's free.

    Totally agree about TextWrangler!

For an example, I just did a google for ["mac os x" keyword research] (without the brackets - they're there for clarity) and got a hit on a Mac version of SEOLab.

Without a specific question, it's difficult to give specific answers. What niche or method of IM?

John Kennedy's right -- NeoOffice is the Mac-specific version of OpenOffice. You can also get free versions of FTP upload software (Cyberduck) and web authoring software (Komposer).

Here are a couple of directories of available Mac programs...
