Cookie Expiration Explanation?

Sorry if this has already been answered; I had a search around and couldn't find anything.

Cookies such as "lifetime" or those that favour the first refer are rather self-explanatory, but can anyone please shed some light on how 30/60/90 day cookies work?

For example:

- Day 0: Affiliate Marketer 1 [AM1] directs a consumer to SiteX and his cookie is set for 30days
- Day 19: AM2 directs the same consumer to SiteX
- Day 34: AM3 directs the same consumer to SiteX

Once AM1's cookie expires, does AM2's then apply for 30 days? Or once AM1's goes is it a clean slate and the next to set their cookie applies for 30 days?

Assuming it is not a lifetime cookie, nor a first referral cookie, when AM2 or AM3 directs the same consumer to the site, that affiliate's cookie overwrites the previous affiliate's cookie.

In the same instance, if the expiration period elapses before a cookie is overwritten, it is as though the cookie was never written (clean slate).

Lifetime generally means that the cookie is set until the user clears it or until another affiliate writes over it. Cookies that favor the first affiliate are pretty rare due to security issues. Affiliates would just try to bait as many people into clicking as they could.

Thanks Sid and DubDubDubDot for clarifying that.

Makes much more sense now as to the practicalities of it all.

It's all depend on network or website, mostly big networks has 30 days cookie expiration. It's also depend on user that if user that they have clear cookie or not.
