Obviously social media is the best for improving search engine rankings. Social signals play a major role in search these days, email marketing is for making money not for improving search engine rankings.

Getting traffic from email marketing is not easy, you need to be good with copy writing.

Your question is really weird, especially for someone who's selling backlinks you should be the one telling us what's better.

Across all industries, email marketing currently has double the return on investment over any other form of marketing.

You asked about getting traffic though, so this isn't a comparison of social vs email at all. With email, you get traffic, build lists and then market to your list...which you can't do without traffic or a list. So social media wins by default.

Pretty much the only way to get instant and large amount of unique(real) visitors is PPC.

Of course you can mix PPC with social media as well and use Facebook PPC, Twitter PPC, LinkedIn PPC, etc. etc.

Like stated by the others here, social media is obviously better as it is proven to have effects on SEO, when email marketing on the other hand does nothing but generate traffic.

If you do plan on using email marketing though, it's not always going to be easy. You have to write good sales content, and if you're not sending to a targeted email list then your leads will be non-existent.

Use social media marketing to build your email list and from there promote your products/services.

Social media is great to get traffic and seo, because people sharing your content is a ranking factor in the search engines.

When you get traffic you have to ensure you get them on your list and as your list grows you'll have a steady source of instant traffic.

    Hi James,

Both But go heavy on email to build bonds, and heavy on social to build new, trusting traffic.

    Connect through social.

    Form the bond through email.

    Try that 1-2.

Also, blog. Buy a self-hosted Wordpress Blog.

Build your authority. Stand out from the crowd. Show off your knowledge.

That right der is the Holy Trinity of online marketing

    Tweeting from Bali.

Both are equally important. Email marketing creates instant traffic especially once you've build your list well and have a strong relationship with the subscribers. It takes skill but more of being yourself. It's nothing a little self-education can't solve.

As for social media, it's awesome for creating followers, traffic, creating tribes/communities and many more. It takes more time and work however but once it works, it works good!

If you ask me, focus on the two. Always build your list and focus on generating lasrer targeted leads so your email marketing campaign wouldn't be as frustrating. You'll get more opens and clicks that way.

Just be consistent on what you want and go at it.
