What Do You Wish You'd Known When You Were An IM Newbie?

Just wondering if some of you could share what you'd wish you had learnt early on in your Internet Marketing experience? (When you were a 'newbie'??)

OR

If you ARE a newbie - what do you want to know about/how to do?

I wish I had known that the secret to making money online was to find one technique, master it and STICK AT IT! I jumped between adsense sites, arbitrage, clickbank and so much more before realising that Jack of all trades = master of none.

I wish I had known about how to drive traffic to sites. I don't know how many products that I purchased that promised me great wealth, that were useless because they didn't tell you how to get traffic to your site. They would tell me that the money is in the list, but you'll never get a list without traffic. And it's funny how adsense doesn't seem to do much when your site doesn't get any visitors.

The money is actually in the traffic.

I agree Tracey - although I read over and over the importance of staying focused I really didn't get it. I thought my focus was supposed to be only on my ultimate goal so I was jumping from one thing to another in an effort to get there. It didn't matter if I was good at whatever the method was or not - and after giving a technique a try for a solid month or so, which in my opinion at the time was long enough, - LOL - I would be convinced that it was not the method for me and try something else.

I finally learned that I needed to use what skills I already had to work with - which is a foundation in nursing, teaching, administrative skills and writing. I am not the least bit technical. I have learned that I need to avoid that aspect of IM. But I can write articles, reports, web content, ebooks, etc. And that opens a lot of doors in the IM world.

What I am saying is that I read the ebooks and forum posts that told me to assess my skills and use what I have, and to stay focused, but I was too stubborn to listen. I had to make my own mistakes and learn the hard way.

I consider myself still a newbie, I've been in IM 6 months or so now - I think I'll consider myself a newbie until after the one year mark. I really wish I'd taken the time to learn more about SEO in the beginning, it's only in the last month or so that I've really learned a lot about it and put it all into practice. Other than that, I'm glad I've made some mistakes and wasted time on things that don't work because that's how you learn For only being 6 months in, I think I've learned pretty quickly and am gonna make sure to never stop learning and developing. This forum has been a great help too, I like the way everybody tells it how it is here.

What do you consider to be the BASIC technical skills a newbie would need to have?
      - Registering a domain, redirecting to server....??
      - what else should someone be able to do one their own do you think??

I wish that I had known about wordpress.org. I spent time learning html and css and did it all for my first 2 websites. I guess that knowledge is good to have.
Now I know that I can just install a blog onto a site, make it look like a website and voila all done in a few minutes.

12 years ago we were all newbies in a brave new world

Apart from the fact that there were less than a million users, there were no reference points for IM. I guess we were the trailblazers laying the foundations.

One lesson I should have learned is that business is business and people are people, and human behaviour is human behaviour. Only the medium changes.

Focus on people instead of on money, and success is almost assured.

Wish I knew the real deal on how to get JV's instead of all the CRAP that is thought in alot of these courses.

Like others have said, I don't consider myself an IM'er with all the bells and whistles yet

Two people have already said it but it's well worth repeating: find one thing and commit to it. If you're going to write articles, learn how to do it properly and don't stop until you got it working. If you're going to do content sites for Adsense or affiliate income, start building that empire and don't get sidetracked, etc.

I think the major problem for all newbies, as it was for me, is information overload and people selling supposedly bigger, better and faster ways to make money to you all day long. You need to ignore all that, unsubscribe to all newsletters that contain nothing but product promotions, pick a business model, and work it.

That will be the difference between whether you have a sustainable and growing business in a year or two or whether you're still buying one marketing course after the other wondering where the money is.

I wish I had stuck with "The Fundamentals" of direct marketing and not getting pulled into this whirlpool of the latest and greatest product! Each time a new product comes out, you have to re-learn this new latest and greatest garbage, it fades away, another one comes your way,....and now your back to re-learning another "NEW", latest and greatest product. Bottom line,.....too much time wasted and there's no focus,.......just pick a product or service and stick to the fundamentals!!

Watch what they are doing instead of listening to what they are saying.

There is no such thing as a "magic bullet" or a "get-rich-quick" plan.

Spend less time learning and more time doing

Focus and get really good at one thing, THEN diversify

Mine would be don't try to think you can automate every single thing with software. Just like an offline business you need to hire people to keep it moving. Invest your money back into your business by employing people.

And like John just said, it's all about action and less learning, action becomes learning anyway. Action also means employing people as I mentioned!

I wish I'd known to put my affiliate links on top of my content. For my first six months in IM I was making on average one sale per month. After I moved my affiliate links from the side bar of my blog to the top of my blog I immediately started making multiple sales each day.

I wish I would have understood article marketing way back when. I just focused on creating (or having created) the best articles for my site, and didn't really understand why I would basically want to give any away.

I understood the concept and that you might get traffic from it, but I also heard from many naysayers saying that it didn't work any more. (And that was around ten years ago!) So, I never gave it a try myself.

I wish I would have known about the WarriorForum sooner too.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

I would still like to know how to:
    1. make my site sticky
    2. Create a Squeeze page-Video Optin, knowing how to put my code into the auto responder template and where in word press to place that code. knowing how to not get overwhelmed by Awebbers sophisticaion, and how to make the link to download the free ebook-or content
    3. Creating compelling offers that would help me with my list means not just having a webber but knowing what to put in the messages to make the connection to create buyers

I wished I had learned that internet marketing was really no different than offline marketing and operating an online business was pretty much structured the same as a brick & mortar business....had I known this earlier on, I would have likely picked up and read more books on business and spent less time searching for systems that produced the golden goose.
