Is Squidoo a hypocrite?

They've tightened up the rules. They're blacklisting, deleting and shutting down "forbidden" lenses on the topics of weight loss, credit cards, and other topics. Squidoo says:

The biggest offenders in the spam world, and topics that aren't okay on Squidoo, are:

--Pharmaceutical, drug, and diet aid reviews and diet pill sales. (Examples: Viagra, Hoodia Gordoni, Penis Enlargement pills, **** berry etc)

--Yes, weight loss and dieting lenses

And yet ...

On two of my lenses there are weight loss products advertised that look like they link to flogs.

Champagne weddings on a beer budget

wedding flowers

So it's okay for squidoo to make money off of forbidden topics but not the lens masters?

Unfortunately that seems to be the case.....I guess they don't want to be competing against you with similar products so they just remove yours.

I think it is more of a case of Squidoo desperately trying to clean up their act before Google comes along with an even bigger stick next time and hits them even harder.

Yes it is Internet Bullying of the worst order, yes it stinks, yes it is hypocracy of the highest order but at the end of the day, it's their site, their ball and they can do what they want.

Yes Squidoo can set the rules for whatever they want it's their site.

I don't think it's a matter of "Squidoo desperately trying to clean up their act," the topics we can't write about are still on the site through the ads placed by squidoo.

If you go to their squidoo don't page
      SquidDon't!

They are very specific about what topics won't be allowed. And at the same time they link to sites on viagra, weight loss, and hair loss, 3 forbidden topics, on that very same page.

Squidoo are working to fix this, so that forbidden topics don't turn up in the InfoLinks.

      Dee,

I'm not seeing what you're seeing...

I see ads generated by Google and the Infolinks. These are outside of Squidoo's control.

What is 'inside ' their control they are acting on.

      I don't see the hypocrisy

You can also opt-out of those TV2N ads and the info links. I did, so I don't have those distractions on my lenses.

I control the ads on my own sites through keywords and selecting the CPA programs to promote. Are you saying that squidoo can't control the ads that are placed on their lenses?

I don't have a problem with ads showing up on my lenses. It's ironic that those ads are on topics that I can't write a lens on.

        Yes And No!

I think squidoo would actually of been happy to continue allowing lenses of "forbidden" subjects, however, they got spammed to death and sometimes the quality was appalling.

Now I don't profess to be a great "lens maker", but i still have lenses which provide information on subjects that may still be deemed taboo! I still advertise clickbank products and as of writing this i haven't had any lenses locked (touch wood!)...And i'm pretty sure that there will still be some great, informative weight loss lenses that will pass the inspection.

However, some of the topics mentioned in squids new TOS have some of the worst lenses i've ever seen. I have read lenses that have more links than actual content! And i guess squidoo have noticed that they are always on the same subjects.

So i don't actually think Squidoo object completely to these type of lenses/advertising, they just want to stop the spammers in their tracks! So making a forbidden list is their way of doing this!

        Cheers

That's what I see too.. and they have a very good profit sharing plan. It's still a good website to me.

It looks like they lost formatting. It's not just my lenses. I've checked several other lenses and it's the same thing.

I just checked a few of my lenses and they have the standard look.

YUP. Now think about how many times a forum thread/lens/blog gets popular and gets restricted and/or deleted. See the trend?

Highly trafficked sites are made to make the owners money, no one else. If anyone else makes money it's pure coincidence and won't be tolerated long by the owner.

It's simply a fact of life.
