Clothing store - how to set up and market?

A friend and I are setting up an online clothing store. I will be in charge of the marketing and setting up the site.

What are the steps to doing this? Would you recommend wordpress or something different? Are there any resources that discuss how to do this effectively?

Also, what would be the best way to market? How could I design the site so as to maximize SEO traffic?

    I think more information is needed.

    1) Why have you chosen clothing?
    2) Is this reselling top names or an original fashion line?
    3) What separates your web presence from the billion other clothing websites online?


    If you're reselling, I would probably consider selling through Amazon. I am not sure another clothing retailer website would find much traction online at the moment.

    Getting your clothing line online is relatively simple. Assuming you already have a domain, and have and/or are creating the product.. You need to decide on the platform for your site. I personally recommend BigCommerce, but there are others like WooCommerce (Google ecommerce platformsfor others). Then you can upload your images and design your site.

    If you're creating tshirts or something like that, there are sites where you can upload your designs and they print and ship but you receive a royalty/commission. It sounds like you're trying to create a brand though so I'd start by deciding on a platform.

    I second Michael's opinion, you need to figure out what separates you from the crowd. When you find out what is it, then use it to your advantage!
    Regarding the platform, since you'll be running an eCommerce website, I wouldn't recommend WordPress, but an eCommerce script. What was suggested above should work!

    I just did this for a client (store here) and can help you out. PM me if you need specifics but there's some key things you need to do:

    1) Choose the right ecommerce platform for you i.e hosted vs self-hosted
    2) Make sure you have good copy, photographs and content
    3) Leverage social media but don't forget your own properties i.e email marketing, blog etc

    There's a lot of resources out there on setting up and optimising your online store, Google is your friend.
