Negotiating with a publisher: need your advice

Fellow Warriors,

I'm looking to strike a deal with a publisher where I translate some of their books and where I get the right to publish that translated book in my country (ebook format). They will receive a commision of 40% on every sell I make.

Do you think this would work? Or do you know of other ways to strike such a deal?

Looking forward to your answers!

There are a number of issues associated with what you are proposing. The first is what you can translate from, to. An obscure market is no good. Clearly you can speak English. The next best language in publishing is Spanish.

Translating a book to a sufficiently high standard is also a very time consuming process. Done correctly, and knowing how fast publishers operate, you'll be lucky to get your first one released within 12 months, and then two a year thereafter.

If you choose the right titles, or better still let the publisher choose them backed up with sales figures then there may be a living in it. The one thing in your favor is you are offering to do the majority of the work up front with no fee.

A living, yes, eventually. Money, no. But I wish you the best of luck.
