Writing 2000 word articles to succeed in the online world

Hey everybody. I have been writing 2000 word articles for the past month or so and was just wondering if this is what it takes to succeed in the online world these days? I have done some research on this and found that 1500-2000 word articles often do better than 500 word articles and this is clearly because of the amount of content and information that you can give your visitor. I have been starting to get more daily traffic and now have 176 comments of people saying that they are bookmarking my site and will be back to read more. This is pretty cool as I've only had the site for 4 months and it is my very 1st one. I also have a very low bounce rate and they are staying on my site for an average session of 7:33. I currently have 46 articles and have been adding a new one about once a week. I read somewhere that this increases the amount of views that each article has and will often give you repeat visitors when you add something new. I was just thinking if I keep this up at a rate of one article a week I should have 78 articles by the time I have had the site for a year and think I should be doing a lot better in the rankings by then. What do you think about this idea and how long did it take for you to start making a profit from adding articles? Thanks alot

Reality: You can write 2,000 2,000 word articles and you still won't be successful.

The internet isn't a get rich quick scheme, there are no guarantees that anything you do will work. But good luck anyway!

Pipe Dream: Write 1 2,000 article and make bank. Go ahead and believe that!

Quality is always better than quantity and I wasn't talking about writing 1 2000 word article to make bank. I was talking about consistently adding 1500-2000 word posts in order to keep visitors on your site and improve your rankings in Google.

Words mean nothing. You can go ahead and do that. But the internet marketing game is all about networking and promotion. It has less to do with your content and more about building your brand.

Yes, the content matters but I'd say your content only matters 10%. The rest is how well you market/promote yourself 90%.

Focus less on writing content and more on marketing. Without traffic, spending your time writing stuff no one will ever read is a waste.

why dont you just tell him that you want to sell him a "very good product that will get his website content on page one Google ranking in 1 hour for only $47"...i think that would be easier for you and much more nice to a person who wants to share his success and idea here with you /us.

or you just want to discard his hard work by your "promotion/marketing" hype?

this person talks about his article writing, he didnt even mention big bucks, at all.

That may be true but I would rate it about 50-50. I will probably order some more Facebook ads as soon as I can build up my traffic naturally. I have been using a sharing program and would almost rather use social media and word of mouth but traffic can make all the difference

I wouldn't waste money on promoting a blog. Instead, see how you can promote it and build traffic for free. Don't spend money on your blog until your blog is making money for you. Otherwise you are taking a big risk that is likely to end up doomed.

That is why I have been trying to use social media and YouTube to build up my traffic. I have finally been getting my backlinks indexed after 3-4 months of having the site and think everything will work out as I keep adding more content. I just kind of figure that if you never quit eventually you would have to make something but as your quote says "Money Makes Money". This can be true but only if you use it in the right way. I would bet if you put it into Facebook ads you would have a pretty good chance though. I saw that you just started your blog as well but you're going to need to add ALOT more to it as well and if you start doing what I said above, you may do alright with it. You really need to add some pictures/videos or something more to it though . Also, you may want to add ways to actually improve the lives of your readers as well. It was pretty depressing when I read it and you only had 2 posts that I saw.

It can go along way if it is quality stuff.

I will say that it might help you that in your articles you do have paragraph breaks

I was going to say something similar

If you are producing good content (and it looks good to me) and people are liking it then start spending more time promoting content than producing.

If you produce a killer piece of 2,000 word content then share it and promote in on facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc.

Learn how to socially market and promote content. That will produce much more traffic than trying to cast a wider net for Google.

You can also produce shorter pieces, image posts or video posts without SEO harm. Not all visitors want long content.

Sometimes a single shared image can bring more traffic than a long article.

I would also focus the purpose of your website.

I'm not sure which articles you are talking about but the links in your signature all go to "make money online" content. and most of your top menu indicates that.

But all your recent posts and categories are for metal detectors and metal detector reviews. And there is a link to a metal detector store in the top menu.

I suggest moving the metal detector content and store to a targeted niche site and make "need bucks now" about making money.

          metaldetectorbucks.com is available...

Your kidding right... Good, valuable content is a core principle of any good online business. I can think of thousands of markets in which good content is essentially a make or break point. To dismiss it as 10% of the overall picture and say that 90% of it is about networking and promoting yourself. Tell me, who in there right mind would take you seriously if the content on your website is half assed (Thats what 10% gets you)? Let alone getting new readers to trust you...

Per my testing, a well-written 2,000 word article will generally perform better in the search engines than a 500 word article as long as the main keyword in the title and body of the article is one you can compete for.

However, I don't believe there are definite rules to this. It all depends on many factors.

At the same time, a 623 word article can outperform a 2,000 word article on your site, or anyone else's, too.

On all my sites, I mix in a variety of lengths in my articles and I sometimes go as high as 1,500 +. When I write a really lengthy article, I sometimes break it up into Pt1 and Pt2.

I am not agree with you, Because Old seo strategies are not working and totally waste of time, In that case, if we want good traffic and backlinks,so we need to focus on content,
Content length is very important (google gives more importance to informative and long content according to Mr. Neil Patel and MOZ) and the next step is Interlinking with old well written content.
To reduce bounce rate and engage users, 2000 word article is best

That is true but I would think you would always be safe by adding more and more content to your site. I believe that it has a major impact on your rankings as well as how old your domain is. The #1 spot in my niche is only 3 years old but has a lot of content even though the owner said he hadn't added anything in a while.

First off, grats on starting a new site and sticking with it. You received some very negative comments here early on and those people are 100% wrong...you are absolutely doing the right thing to build a brand. Just realize that every article doesn't have to be 2,000 words; you'll actually limit your subscribers if that's all you write because that's just too much content for some people. If it's well written though, then keep cranking out the longer articles.

Formatting and properly labelled images are crucial though, so make sure you're following Google's best practices (which, by the way...has never, ever changed once since the early 1990's). Short paragraphs, bullet points, labelled images, a strong title, hyperlinks, sub titles...it all has to be there for you to rank well for those terms.

To answer your other question, there's no set time you'll start to make money. It doesn't happen once you reach your 10,000th visitor or anything like that, you begin to make money when you figure out how to monetize your site. For example, Facebook lost money for years because they couldn't figure it out, and there's no magic formula. It will be different for every site. But hopefully you find products within your niche that your readers will appreciate, and that's all it really takes.

Thanks for letting me know. Not all of the articles are 2000 but will probably try and stay over 1000-1500. I get in my zone sometimes and just want to add everything I can and I figure that if I like it, so will other people. I was focused on the metal detectors as my niche and have branched off to treasure hunting and the best ways to make money starting your own website. I have an everything store and a metal detector store just in case anybody is looking for them specifically. I mostly just wanted to make a site that could show people the right ways to make money online as that is truly one of the hardest things when starting out. I'm pretty happy with how it looks right now and my sigs are seperate pages from the articles.

...and right there, you just blew it.

Metal detectors go hand and hand with treasure hunting so those two are a great combined niche. Branching off into the "how to make money online" is a completely different subject though and it belongs on its own website. The more you muddle the waters trying to do a bunch of unrelated things at once, the harder it will be for you to establish a loyal following.

Besides, you're still learning how to make money online so that should not be your focus. Your goal is to give expert advice on whatever you write about...that's the only reason people will follow you. If you want to write about marketing, fine, but start a personal blog and add your experiences. This does not belong on your main site though...it should be as specific to your niche as possible for many different reasons (traffic, SEO, cross promoting, monetizing, etc.). So go back to just treasure hunting/metal detectors and you're fine.

Edit- I just visited your site....my advice is meaningless. You went for a full blown IM site while you're still learning IM, and you're linking to all kinds of stuff in random categories. Very bad move.

        What a great reply!

I really can't add anymore value to the advice, you've received above needbucksnow.

I guess the only thing that I can say is, have a second look at what kk075 is saying.

        If I may, kk075.

It's like starting a blog that helps people answer the question "what should I feed my diabetic, golden retriever?" and giving them the solution to the problem of "what spark plugs should I use, in my truck, to get better gas mileage?"

You might have the best solution to which spark plugs to use in a truck, to get better gas mileage, but if your blog visitor is trying to feed a diabetic, golden retriever. How fast will he or she leave your page?

Now, you might come across someone with both problem, but I would think that would be very rare. It might happen but how often?

Anyway, I've taken your advice, kk075, to heart and I will be mindful to keep my message consistent.

I have to agree with kk on this one. I went to your website and it's all over the place. Your main articles are about treasure hunting finds, but then you have an "everything Amazon store" which brings me to a list of cell phones. On top of that, you have a "top 10 ofers" list which includes Christian dating and "how to eat out for less." You're also trying to show treasure hunters how to earn money on the internet. Nothing really makes sense. I commend you for trying, but by trying to be everything, you're never fully something, if that makes sense. Scale it back and focus different websites on different niches.

Congrats on sticking to it and finding some successes, though!

Yeah right. I was just saying that it is working and it is just a matter of getting traffic for it. I understand what you were saying before about them being different niches and that they should be different websites but all the things you were talking about are under my ways to start your own blog and be successful. The only things that are really there are hosting, autoresponder, maxbounty, free ebook on getting traffic and some clickbank sites. By the way all of my articles are focused on metal detectors and treasure hunting but I'm sure you knew that when you looked at it for 2 seconds. I think it is just a matter of having a successful blog that people love to read and then showing them how to do the same thing. I have also seen a food blog that is doing the same thing and is about 5 years old but making $20K a month this way. Anyways, I think I will take the advice of my 181 comments of people saying they love the blog and are bookmarking it for the latest articles

You may want to look who is leaving the comment. Most people that say they are book marking your site are basically just spammers. Trying to get a link on your site. Nothing more. See where their comments came from.

Some times they will have a whole conversation talking to other spammers about your site. So they can load it up with links. Check what they are promoting.. Common ones are Ugg boots, i-phones, and Luis Vitton handbags.

It does matter. Kind of like saying that it doesn't matter if you have $500 or $10,000 as long as the cash is real. The truth is, you can do a lot more with $10,000 or 10,000 words than you can with the lesser amount.

While your focus should be on quality and engagement, it IS true that 1500+ word posts get more search engine traffic. This has been confirmed by raw data and statistical analysis. I'd strongly advise planning out your content ahead of time, so you can multi-purpose it and later package it in different ways.

My sweet spot is five 500-word articles, that are thematically related and can be presented as a series (part 1 of 5, etc.) -- which lends itself nicely to using them down the road as e-courses, a short report (when combined), or breaking the articles down further for an e-mail marketing campaign, as well as re-purposing the content in various Web 2.0 platforms.

Like DWolfe mentioned, you better watch out for those people. Make sure they are legit.

The long form articles are typically better at rankings but that doesn't mean you can slack off in promotion so if you put in a lot of work in your content, double the effort with promotion and like you said, at the end of the year, you'll have some pretty good traffic flowing in.

Be sure to build a relationship with your readers. It'll be a great help once you hit that plateau.

I usually delete all of the spam and have been getting about 3/4 of them being positive about the site. Those are all of the good ones that I have had so far and have trashed quite a few more of them. I also have a plugin that turns the comments into SEO points https://wordpress.org/plugins/blog-comments-seo/ and I'm hoping these will help me out at some point. Just wanted to tell everybody that the last thing I'm trying to do is spam the forum and there is really no point when my sigs are always under what I write anyways

Thanks alot for saying that and it has been tough starting from scratch and trying to make something that people like and will share with others. I'm pretty self motivated though and have tried and failed at more things than I care to admit when it comes to making money online. I know that the road to having a successful blog is one of the harder and time consuming things that you can ever try and accomplish. I am willing to stick with it for the long run and hopefully by the end of this year will be able to share my success story with everybody here. I would also like to eventually be one of the people that new marketers look to for answers in getting started

Yeah. I think I was trying to appeal to a bigger audience than just metal detectors and have gotten some great comments on the treasure hunting stuff. I actually have 2 different Amazon stores and most people will browse and end up buying something totally different than what they clicked on anyways. I just decided to put in the Top 10 free offers to show people what MaxBounty offered and it goes with starting your own blog. It may be that I have tried to do too much with the website but it is called NeedBucksNow and I wanted to focus on the many different ways of making money

But I have to ask: Where are you promoting your articles? Internet marketing is all about selling. And you have to promote an offer in order to make a sale.

Also, how are you focusing the content of your articles? By that I mean: Are you writing an article with the specific purpose of selling something through the article?

Wouldn't it be good if every one of your articles had at least one link at the end to an offer page? Isn't that the purpose here . . . to monetize your writing skills?

I think you're off to a good start because of what you're doing . . . but if you want to actually make money from it . . .
    1. Promote your articles to your niche audience after they are written, and
    2. Write every article with the idea that it will lead to the sale of one of your products or services (or an affiliate product through your link),
    3. Also, every article should be indexed on your site before you promote it on (to) other sites,
    4. Every article should have a link back to your archive of all the other articles (so folks who like your writing can get more of it).

Thanks for letting me know and I have mostly been using social media and YouTube as the way to promote them. I also have a Wordpress sharing service that has helped in gaining the initial shares for the posts in order to get even more shares of them. I have in the last 2 weeks been getting some search engine traffic from them and that is where I'm getting most of my positive comments. Most of the articles are really informative and don't really have any hype or anything about trying to sell somebody but I included a link to my Amazon store at the bottom of all of them. I also have where you can read the next article and leave a comment at the bottom which had helped in gaining almost 200 comments now. I have had quite a few people say they are going to bookmark the site and to keep writing but have yet to really make any sales. I'm hoping that it is only a matter of getting alot more traffic and with some more content and a few more months of aging the domain that more of my articles will get indexed and it will do much better

You might want to install a spam comment blocker like askimet. Generic comments like "I love your site. I just bookmarked it!" are usually spam and if you start letting them in, they will overflow your pages.

I'm able to approve or delete the comments before I post them on the site and I always make sure to trash any that have spam links in them. They are usually a little bit better than that and can tell that most people did like what they read

There is no doubt that what you are doing can work, will it? is the question. For traditional blogs longer articles are better for rankings and traffic. You don't need anyone's opinion you can see it in your numbers if they are growing.

How long did it take for someone to make money from their articles? Hard question to answer. There are people who put up 3 articles totaling 2000 words and make money while others can blog all their life and not make money. It is all about how well you are serving and meeting the needs of your readership.

If you can see that it is growing, you like what you are doing and you have a plan to monetize it keep going!

I dont think it matters how many words are in the article, it matters how quality the article is and where it is posted.

Hey let me tell you that if your article is contain the word that you want to rank on Google 3 times, you will definitely drive more visitors to your website and every article you write on your blog if is unique and seo friendly will be indexed by Google for sure. So keep writing very good and unique content all you have to, will be in your advantage.

Content length is only one way to measure if the article is a good quality or not. A "quality" article can be 250 words or 1250 words. What matters is that you choose an idea and write until you're finished with that idea to the best of your abilities.

Of course, this doesn't guarantee profits. That's a whole other animal! But, great content is an excellent start.

It's your blog so you build it the way you please. There's no limit to how many words you can write. If you can do 2,000, then why limit yourself? Write 2,000. The awesome thing about that is the longer and more relevant the blog post is, obviously the more value is present. If there's a lot of value, people will feel and see it creating more attraction hence more traffic.

If it was me though, I wouldn't limit myself to 1 article a week. I've been blogging for 5 years now and I never go lower than 3 blog posts a week each blog post at least 700-1,500 words. If you can do 5 in a week, that would be 20 articles a month. A little bit of sacrifice at the start is always worth it when the reward at the end line is way worth it!

By the way, congrats with your current results! Things are only going to keep getting better from here on in.

One thing to remember is that the longer the article, the better its structure has to be.

Most people skim and scan online so you need to create signposts in the form of subheads and bullets to allow easy access to the various sections.

Otherwise a visitor looking for a particular piece of information might get frustrated and click away.

As a general rule, longer articles will always rank higher than shorter articles, if all else is held equal.

I once saw someone get #1 on Google for a semi-competitive keyword in just a few days by publishing a 10,000+ word article on the topic.

If you want to succeed online and achieve something by writing your articles, you have to make an effort to make them great and useful for the readers.
Just by writing 2,000 words, you won't have any guarantee that you'll be successful
You can write an amazing and insightful article in just 500-600 words, or, you can write a crappy article of 2,000 words...
So, the thing is, don't focus on length, focus more on quality.

The first thing that comes to mind here...paragraph breaks.

Use them for your forum posts AND your site. It makes your content a lot more readable.

Additionally, you really should think about narrowing the focus of your site to just metal detector related items.

MMO is too broad here, and pretty much irrelevant. You can't use metal detectors online and to randomly throw in an article about making money online whilst having an overall them of a metal detectors for your articles makes your site focus unclear.

Try to write for the reader rather than thinking of word count minimums or maximums. It is true that longer articles tend to get more exposure, but don't write more just for the sake of having more words on the page.

I've had articles of 5000+ words that were parts of series where the word count for each article was heavily staggered between 1500 - 7500 words for each article. It's about getting the message out there, as clearly and concisely as possible, without losing the attention of your readers. And that last bit is the bigger challenge, i guarantee you.

If people are enjoying your writing that much, the only mistake you are making is not capturing their email addresses. If you are, then you aren't following up with emails.

Don't jump into emailing people like many marketers here do though.

Affiliate offers are all well and good if you personally find them beneficial, or if they are a good fit for what you are writing about, but building rapport with your list should be more than that.

Think about this - how often do we all find something really beneficial online and bookmark it, but never actually return to the site?

The answer is to grab your visitors email. Email them with your new posts, stuff you find that's useful (someone else's stuff), links to products you create with a subscriber discount, good affiliate offers.

Just don't write and then expect to make money.

That being said, if you can write that much, have you thought of creating a PLR store and selling your writing?
